Starting From Scratch - How Would You Generate 1000 FREE Targetted Hits?

Okay question for all Warriors

Imagine you were starting out today, maybe launching a new blog.

You have no list, articles. bookmarks or feeds and need to build your traffic strategy.

So here is my teaser ...

What would you do to generate your first 1000 hits using a free method?

I know for me that I would write articles (big surprise), join a free social bookmarking service like Onlywire, start a twitter page and a facebook page.

If it is a new blog then I must fill it up with pretty good number of posts. Create a page for it, recommend it to all of my friends and ask to share it with others too. If you have 4000+ friends and above, getting a thousand visitors can be easier than it seems.

I'd start the Twitter and Facebook page, but I'd also look at where else my ideal audience hangs out online as an idea repository. Many niches have common questions or problems, so making some of those issues post topics will help me draw in search engine traffic.

For bonus points, if I found those topics on a forum, I can start contributing there as well. The next time the same questions come up, I can give the short answer and then give a link to the in-depth post on my blog.

I like your response because it is more strategic than just activity based

Fwiw, the term 'hits' relates to how many files are served up for each visit to a web page. So if you make a webpage with a lot of images and links it could have hundreds of hits per page view.

I know you meant 'visitors', I'm just bustin' your chops.
