Shady Marketers..Be Careful..PayPal is Cracking Down

This is the email I received from PayPal few days ago:

"As of 11/01/10, your customers who pay with PayPal are protected for items they receive that are "significantly not as described". This means that you may be liable for the cost including the original shipping charges should they file a claim. However, by offering this protection, PayPal helps encourage customers to shop on your site.

We recommend that you make sure that photos and written descriptions on your site are as accurate as possible, to help avoid these types of claims.

The change to our buyer protection policy will take effect from November 1st, 2010 and won’t apply to transactions made before this date. "

What does this mean?

Those who are used to trick customers into false expectations with false claims and hype will get tough times with PayPal disputes and refund requests.

For other honest marketers, there 'll be no much trouble, except taking additional measures to make sure your customers fully and clearly understand what they will get before paying.

PayPal has always been dealing with shady marketers so I don't see any special thing about whatever they are trying to do right now. The only thing that worries me is that they also close the account of reputable marketers.

Definitely, there is no perfect human system.

I suspect the only change has Paypal now enforcing its rules on those who sell physical products also...

    Hey There,

    This was just discussed here

Given the ease at which PayPal buyers have been able to force refunds in the past, the only big negative is the way PayPal (and eBay) is making such a big deal about this - it can only encourage more claims.

    What are your thoughts?

You may look at it as a way of cracking down on "shady marketers", but what about the shady buyers? Unscrupulous buyers have figured out that PayPal's disregard for sellers equals lots of free stuff for them.
