Reluctant to Grab the Opportunity

I am not a not a webdeveloper but been with IM since 2007. Before I discovered IM I used to create websites using notepad (manual HTML codings), Frontpage and I know a little dreamweaver back 1n 2004 but now I do not know the latest version but I'll probably can learn it again if I will have time...Before IM I used to make free simple static websites for friends at work using free hosting service...that time I have no idea about blogger and wordpress..I do not know any programming language.

When I lost my job, I discovered IM and been here full time since 2007. I use blogger but later on I set up my landing page on my own domain and use Wordpress...I think I quite know SEO but not quite confident if I am really good at it but if I write articles for targeted keywords the articles always make it at the 1st page of google and I also have many articles on the No.1 spot...

I am an IM Markerter..I know for sure because that is what I do everyday, create blogs, wordpress, write, sell and promote, affiliate mktg and earn...

I am still earning but of course i want to diversify and create multiple streams of income..and learn everyday

One day while at the bank...A co-worker from my previous job recognized me and he was so delighted to see because I lost contact with them since I lost my job. He asked me what is my work now.....From experience most people here are clueless if I say Internet Marketer so to make it easy I just told him I am a webmaster....

Now after hearing that he was so excited because his new company want to have a website and he asked me if I can do it for them (with pay of course)....I became speechless for a while and thinking what I am going to say...I have no experience making webpages for a company that will pay me....What am I going to do? Am I really a webmaster when all I know is blogger, wordpress and frontpage?

Stunned with the offer...I said..."I have a lot of work now I do not know if I will have time for your company website...etc. etc."...Obviously I am making excuses....

So to make the story short I was reluctant but he insist that his company is not that high tech they just want something online and want their catalogs online for their costumers to view ....He said he will call me again if everything is final with his boss....they are not in a hurry they can wait anytime, he said.....

So if he called me again....I think I have no choice but to find out how to get this job done..Besides I really want to accept it I am just hesitant and afraid if I can do it..As I still doubt if i am really a webmaster with my little skills...

Is it OK to use Wordpress as a company website?
How about the hosting? Should I host it to my current hosting account together with my own websites as net marketer or should I register for a different account? Or should they register their account, pay for it and I will just access the Cpanel?

How about the domain name? Should I buy the domain name? If I will buy the domain name how about the renewal? Or should they buy it and worry for the yearly renewal?

Sorry I am really new to this offline opportunity but I really want to learn and find another source of income...and obviously the opportunity is presenting itself..

I also do not know how to price this kind of project

Any advise?

thanks

    Hi Raquel

    First congratulations on the opportunity!

WordPress is fine for a corporate site, in fact it's a good choice as they can always get support in the future and upgrades and design changes will be easy.

You should have the customer buy their own domain name, explain to them that it's a business asset and they need to have control over it.

As for hosting you could do it two ways:

1 - Have them buy hosting
2 -Get a reseller account (I have a few at Hostgator, cost 25 bucks a month each) and resell hosting to them. Charge them monthly for both hosting and "maintenance services" - keeping WordPress up to date, periodic backups.

As for the price it really depends upon what features they want and if you need a custom theme or if you intend to purchase a commercial one or use an open source one.

Best of luck with your new venture!

      Bill,
Thanks for these tips and advice these. These things are really helpful. The hostgator reseller is a nice idea.

Only wordpress.org - not the free dot com version

Sign up for an affiliate program, and get them to order through your link.

Personally, I like the clients to get these things in their names - but you can always pick it up and transfer the account down the road. You can have multiple accounts at places like godaddy.

Are you a consultant or are you going to build the theme? Depends on where you live, what the market will bear, and if you want to give your friend a discount.

Also, will you be offering additional services down the road?

If you're able to support yourself with your IM business, I'd say skip the job and focus on developing your own stuff. Jobs limit how much you can earn, IM businesses do not.

The only thing that worries me a little is the fact that your potential client wants to put his catalog online. How extensive is this catalog, and what are his requirements regarding the organization and categorization of items on the website? Does he want to sell this merchandise online?

This might get pretty complex if he has an extensive catalog and wants it displayed in a specific manner on the website.

        Hi...
        Next time...
Just grab every opportunity you have
You have to try it to know how far you can do that ^____^
        anyway,
wordpress can be used as a corporate website
to make it looked professional, you can purchase a professional-looking premium wordpress theme or just outsource it. you can be a broker if you want ^_^
about hosting, you can choose hosting company that you like (hostgator and lunarpages is quite good enough ) and then grab your affiliate links so they may sign up for their account and you may get the long lasting affiliate commission.
do the same thing with domain name. everytime they have to renewal, there will be an announcement through email so, you dont have to worry about that.
about the price, it depends on your choice on domain company, hosting company, etc
        hope this helps

@ivanadee The affiliate account on the hosting and domain name is a good idea.. Thanks

@Mike Bradson . Yes it is also my concern..that this project/assignment will get some of my IM time and other things I might discover at IM...I am just considering this because I want an extra income as my IM earnings is down by 50% this year.

    Wordpress is fine.

As Paulie said though, putting a catalog online can really take a lot of work.

Be open and honest with them and realize you may have to outsource that part.

I've simply asked clients in the past what their budget is - sometimes they will tell you, others they won't, but it may give you an idea.

    Congrats on the opportunity!

    All success,

Suggest that you refer the lead to a local web agency. I usually get 15-20% of the billed value when I do this. It means that you will get some loot and not have to spend any time on stuff that can easily be a distraction from your IM activities

I have the perfect product for you if you have some time. i can't PM you, i don't have enough posts.

Easy to design, it will handle the catalog, and it will also solve your hosting problem. It will benefit your friend also because it's all-in-one.

I hired a designer who was designing on notebook just like you, when he got a hold of the system he taught me what to do.
