Outsourcing WordPress?

One of the biggest things that holds me back from building new sites is customizing WordPress. I don't mind uploading it or adding content or anything, I just hate having to mess with themes, plugins, etc..

I've been thinking about hiring outsourcers to do this for me, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Is there some sort of sub-setting where you can give someone access without them being able to totally jack your website? In trying to find someone to do this, am I looking for a VA or...? Does anyone have experience with hiring someone to do these tasks?

You don't need a VA, just someone who is proficient in Wordpress and knows exactly how you want it to be configured with the right plugins and settings. You probably also want someone who is proficient in graphics to a certain degree, so that they can customize your header and other elements if needed.

You'd give them FTP access only to the domain that you want them working on, so they can't go in and wreck your other websites.

      Thanks Paul!

I don't understand what you mean about giving FTP access. Though you mentioned FTP, I'm assuming you don't mean having them just customize and send me a copy of the customized WordPress theme for me to upload via FTP? My current domains are all with the same hosting provider, so I don't know if that would pose a problem?

This is one area where I'm not at all savvy, so you can see where I'd want to hand it over to someone else :p

        Hi Jillycakes,

Once you have mastered Wordpress you will have no issues with creating sites in less than an hour. I too was like you a few years ago :-).

I think wordpress is one of the easiest programs to work with and with the click of a few buttons you can change the look immediately.

Bit of self promotion.... check out my WSO in my sig - I am more than happy to answer any additional questions you might have about Wordpress.

If you tend to setup a lot of sites you could take a look at Jason Fladliens WPTwin Plugin. It´s 99$ right now, but you can setup your "template blog" with all the plugins, settings, about page, privacy page and make a clone with it.

When ever you need to create a new WP Blog, just deploy the clone and you are set in <5 minutes.

I didn´t get to work it with my own VPS yet, but it works great on hosting services with CPanel.

Jillycakes, that's not what I meant at all, lol! What you do is go into your cPanel and create dedicated FTP access only for the domain that you want your outsourcer working on.

This way they can't go in via FTP and wreck/destroy any of your other websites you have hosted there!

    Hi,

You need to find someone you can trust!

Well for Wordpress customization, if you have that already installed for him, most of the stuff can be
done from Wordpress Admin Panel so you may not need to hand over any cpanel or ftp details to him.

In case they need to kill some fill by going to FTP, as Paul explained above, give them FTP account
which have only access to the associated domain directory.

BTW I too offer these outsourcing services at my site WarMarks.com, Let;s talk and see
if we are good fit for you to work with. LINK is in my SIG, last line. Thx

    Regards,
    Mohsin

If you're doing a lot of the same setups I'd do one "default" setup then clone it. I've heard good things about WPTwin but haven't tried it. The better cloners can run $50+ but I would think the time savings alone would ofset the cost quickly.

Here's a simple 6 step tutorial on how to do it without buying a cloner ... How To Clone A WordPress Blog In Under Ten Minutes

You can also google "how to clone wordpress" and find many many more.

    Hope this helps!

      Jillycakes,

I have Donna Hamer's e-book and it is very good. You may want to check it out. Post #4

I have a part-time VA in the Philippines that installs my blogs for me. Installs plugins, themes, etc. We had an issue when Wordpress 3.0 came out. She tracked down the problem and updated a plugin. She has been working with me for the better part of a year. Trust factor is very high!
