Have you been successful providing a writing service? And, what kind of pricing model?

I've been tossing around the idea of beginning a writing service. It just seems like the next logical step after making my own products (although, I'm sure some would argue that it would be better to offer a service BEFORE selling a product...)

I have no idea how to execute this though.

Have YOU been successful executing a writing service? In my research, I've found a ton of different pricing models.

What works for you?

I now make my living as a full time writer. I write web content for websites and I also write for my own websites in my spare time. Unfortunately, my own stuff keeps getting neglected in favor of clients work.

The backbone of my writing services is writing for Demand Media Studios. While DMS doesn't make up the bulk of my income now, it is a steady client that can be relied upon to fill in the lean times. In the beginning they were full time. Now, I write for a variety of other clients and use them between clients. They have an unlimited stream of work, and I am approved to write for their premium clients so I often get higher paying assignments.

Since DMS pays a minimum of $15 for a standard article, there is never any reason for me to accept any job that pays less than $15/article. I might do a job that pays less if the subject is one that I can write quickly with minimal research.

Having a client like DMS frees me to look for high end clients and price my services higher. I am never desperate for work.

I look for clients that need web content on a recurring basis and are willing to pay a reasonable rate for quality work. Most of my clients are website designers who design sites for doctors, lawyers and commercial clients who want high quality writing on their sites. My prices range from $15 to $50 or more per article/page, depending on the complexity of the work and the research required. I write mostly business, legal, medical, gardening and my favorite, food articles along with anything else a client may need.

I am able to charge these rates for my articles because the clients need a high quality product, not just an article for links. There are probably a lot of writers charging even more for this same work.

The most important aspects of my writing services are excellent grammar and sentence structure, writing short paragraphs that are to the point, and writing for about an 8th grade reading level. I combine that with a love of research and learning new things. I write informative web content, not sales pages, although I often include a call to action of some sort in an article. My clients are looking to gain customers from their website.

If you are interested in following a similar path, you can PM me and I will give you some pointers. Good luck.

Thanks for that thorough response dwatkins. Since I began writing online, I've written close to 1,000,000+ words now, spaced over a variety of different articles....Most of my articles are in excess of 1,000 words. Some will disagree, however, I find that these articles tend to do the best from an SEO standpoint in the search engines. My earnings have come primarily from writing for lifetime residuals.

While I've done quite well in that respect, I can't help but think there is more I could be doing.

If I begin a service, I'm contemplating making a fixed rate for at least $30 for a well-written, highly researched, 1,000+ word article.

Where do you go about 'finding' your clients? I don't quite know where these people 'hang out'....
