Dishonest Marketing - How Do You Feel?

Hey everyone, as I've gotten into IM, I've noticed that many of the sales pages and methods that I have studied are extremely dishonest. Even among the WF I've seen many posts that, to put it bluntly; tell you to lie. For example, I was reading a post about offline CPA marketing and someone mentioned one of their methods. They told us how they created an ad that said something along the lines of...

"I just got a $50 home depot gift card, but since I am moving to the U.K. soon, I wont have use for it. I am selling it for $30. If interest please contact at blah blah blah. Then when they emailed me I would tell them that I already sold the card but I got it from an online offer. I would send them the link to the offer, telling them that it might not still be up but it's worth a try."

Now, I cannot be certain, but I would venture to say that this was dishonest. The person was not moving back to the U.K. nor did they actually have the card at any point. It makes me wonder how many people run their business in this way.... And I wonder if they are completely ok with it... Taking advantage of peoples naivety doesn't seem right to me. What do you think? In the words of Wise ol' Solomon:"The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out. "

Can you even make a very large income while staying honest? I sure hope so.

Ya, the above example is fraudulent and you had the right reaction. Sadly there are MANY WSOs here (many with rave reviews) that advocate this same criminal activity.

If see it, report and avoid it.

I agree that there are many dishonest tactics used by internet marketers.. especially in the "get rich quick" niche. And it was very frustrating when I first started seeing this everywhere.. typical "guru" stuff like hurry and pay because there are only 100 spots, etc..

I found out that you can make a large income online and still be honest. There are people out there who have.. you need to find someone you trust and have a good feeling about.. I personally have so there is hope

When I first got into IM I almost quit because of the level of deceptiveness encroached in this industry. It seemed every method that was taught and every approach I researched was contaminated with an element of deception.

But it became evident to me that we all have an individual responsibility to how we go about our business. I made an irrevocable decision to never follow any route that is even slightly tainted with deception. And as a result my conscience has remained clear in all my IM ventures.

Lots of make money people out there. I have experienced the same. This has to be the learning curve most swim through. The more swimming we do the more you learn. I beleive this is called real life 101 education, internet marketing.
Just like someone overweight. They may be taking in too many calories ( IM- Information overload ). Sounds like alot of Newbies , including myself, need to search for a diet plan that works ( IM- 1. Training webinars which can be found in this forum, 2. particicipate and listen to other forum members share their stories and inputs 3. ect. ). This forum and its members have helped me focus on less intake of all sales advertisements and focus on the tools needed to build a successful internet marketing business. These do not include the overinflated ads on " Making Money", I have had to cut these out of my IM Diet. ! I have signed up for the ( 7 Day Boot Camp, Internet marketing, through this Forum ).
Being apart of this Forum has really helped. I beleive there is a lot of good information here!

      Thanks for sharing!

"Advertising" is just another word for "lying" to most people.

So when they need to advertise... they reason that since they never believe what an ad says anyway, expecting it to be completely full of lies, it's perfectly fine to fill it up with a bunch of lies.

These people don't last, usually. When they do, they tend to change their approach. But there are always new people with these ideas entering the field, so it seems like there are just so many of them.

Look at it this way, if you want the easy way out than yea you can lie, and deceive your audience by suckering them to purchase your $10 product that promises them a five figure monthly salary. In the end you would be giving yourself a bad reputation and tarnishing your name, hence ruining your long term business.

Sure you could create complete BS sales letters and promote CPA offers on how you tried this pill and had amazing results, etc. basically Blowing Smoke.

Or you could sustain a long term profitable business with a loyal audience and visitors to your site by providing them valuable, honest information. Look at many of the top blogs as an example, they provide high quality beneficial content that helps their visitors, hence their visitors trust them, are loyal to them, and will buy from them.

Sure it's a long term strategy but it's a winning strategy if you would like to build a long term profitable business.

Same concept applies when using White vs Black Hat traffic/SEO strategies. In the end the White HaT will always win.

Every time you click on something that says free and it sends you off to opt in or sales page you are dealing with a liar on the other end of the transaction.

When you don't understand what a word means, that doesn't make the people who use it liars.

      define free - Bing

      free [ free ]
      1. costing nothing: requiring no money to be paid

If you get sent to an opt-in, that is not money.

If you get sent to a sales page, but you can say "no" and still get the free offer, it is not requiring anything.

So if I say you can have something free, but you have to fill in a form and then either do a little dance or give me $10... that's still free.

Hmmm, you're going to struggle to build a list if you're not willing to use the word free on your opt in pages.

Suggest you check to see what the word "free" is.

By the way, it is a marketer's job to embellish their offers so people take action, join their list which gives the marketer the opportunity to serve them.

In the IM world as in the IRL world there will always be people that try to take advantage of someone else to get a quick buck because they're still too imature to understand the implications of what they do and what might happend to them if they keep doing them. I guess just as long as there's people who believe con artists, con artists will keep existing.

Just play by the rules, be safe, and you will be just fine.

I think the issue of overzealous advertising tends to go through cycles, and we seem to be entering one of the peak periods. As competition increases in a business area (niche), the advertising tends to use more agressive techniques. Unfortunately, there are some advertisers that will go overboard, and then another group that feels they have to match grandiose claims to compete, and it just escalates.

Some of the advertisers caught up in this didn't do it on purpose, but got caught up in the frenzy. Unfortunately, there are some that routinely do everything they can to obscure what they are selling, or promise the sun and moon when they know they cannot hope to deliver. Typical in this are claims of making a person a millionaire nearly overnight... or on autopilot... or without any effort... I could go on and on.

Unfortunately, I got caught up with some of their rhetoric and bit a time or two, and found that the greater the claims or the more blind the advertisement, the higher likelihood they will honor their money back guarantee...

I bought too many programs that just didn't provide the informaiton I needed, had had to buy so many different ones to get all of the details to actually get anything done. I got really frustrated with the whole online marketing process. I got so mad about it I wrote my own instructional program, and am embarking on my ownn grand experiment to see if I can sell an honestly developed, honestly presented program, without any hype, fluff or bluff.

I'm hoping that I can start a new trend of returning to the basics of telling the truth about what the product is, and how much effort it really takes to get started.

    Hello James,

I don't know what you consider a very large income, but yes you can do well
and keep your conscience intact. Staying honest is subjective, too.

You look young, James, and I don't mean that in any negative way. I'm not
young, I'll be 53 on Monday.

I'll tell you something, and this is based on a helluva lot; I think most of the
world including very many areas of business are not honest at all. In fact,
the history of big business is extremely dishonest and even criminal.

I can tell you stories about people who preach from the highest pedestal, and
they're not honest for a number of reasons. That's all based on my experience.

It's funny, but not really, that very many people do not apply the same standards
to themselves that they apply to others.

People also tend to look at themselves with less clarity than they do with others.

It's just human nature, James. The only thing you can do is control your own
actions. That is it - that's as good as it will ever get. I know that it can be an
assault of some kind when you see these things for the first time. I read the
    posts, above.

But don't let all of it discourage you from doing and accomplishing something.

    Ok?

I just don't understand human nature. "Oh MAN! If I tell these people that I can make them a millionaire over-night on autopilot for free, I can make like...$10000!!! Or...I could be honest and take my time to make a sustainable business and make like...$1,000,000... Hmm I'll go with the method that takes no work."

Looks to me like you understand human nature just fine.

However, with greater age and wisdom, you will revise that to something more like "People are stupid, dishonest, selfish, and mean."

You will also reach a point where you fully grasp Tommy Lee Jones' line in MIB: "A person is smart. People are dumb, stupid, panicky animals and you know it."

Individuals transcend stereotypes all the time. Groups, on the other hand... well, they're stereotypes for a reason. The larger the group, the worse things get in the fat part of the bell curve.

Great verse man. I was going to post a few more that pertain to wealth gained dishonestly but I chose not to.

I guess the deceitful IM'ers represent society. In society, many people base there business on honesty and integrity and their business usually lasts. On the other hand, many people base their business on lies and deceit and, as history as shown us, they usually fall away. SO, that being said, I probably shouldn't worry about the dishonest IM'ers, as they won't be around long enough to compete
A person knows when they are dealing with someone of integrity, and I believe that a customer that trusts you is infinitely more valuable to you then just another clueless person caught up in a web of lies. You might get a greater number of people by making grand exaggerations of reality, but those people will quickly realize that they have been duped and will most certainly avoid doing business with you again. Gaining a client by honest means is most certainly the way to go if you want a long term business.

I believe I am answering my own posts... Well, let them be a lesson to deceitful warriors!

You know, the problem is that people love the dreams, and they continually fall for the deception.

Create two products, put your heart and soul into one and make it a practical guide that is of real benefit.

For the second, bang it off in an hour, call it some mega name and make a load of obviously false claims.

Then put them in the WSO section. Which do you think will sell the most?

People love to be deceived and led into dreamworlds.

My first IM product cost me over $3000. It was all outdated information. however it got me on the path to learn more. Unfortunately I purchased it at a conference and was unable to get my money back.

I am sure i am not the only one to buy some hyped up product. Now If it does not have a money back guarantee I don't even look at it. Even if it is recommended by a "trusted" marketer.

I have got my money back on several products. One cost over $800 and another $2000. If i had the opportunity to get my money back (which i did) and give a donation (which I didn't) for what they were worth TO ME I may have given $50 each as there is always something to learn.

Having said that in one of these cases I wasted an incredible amount of time watching the videos waiting for the genius or revelation to appear. Still waiting???. I would have expected to be paid by him for wasting my time.

I believe in karma so i believe unscrupulous marketers will get their just rewards. And it usually comes when it will hurt the most or teach them a hard lesson.

There are two ways to earn money.

    1. Find some way to trick people and, in effect, steal their money without breaking any laws.
    2. Provide a good product that people want or a service or information that people need.

I choose to go with option #2 but I realize that many lazy people out there choose #1. So when somebody tells you they can make you rich in very little time with nearly no effort, skip that thread! They will just waste your time and steal your money.

Hard work combined with a good product or service works! It's always worked! It will always work!
