Have I Been Hacked? Where Did These Come From?

I'm not happy!

I just noticed that two of my sites have outbound links on the home page that I did NOT put there.

There are three links below the footer of my websites in very small text & very faint colour, I actually don't know how I managed to spot them.

I have no idea how they got there!

Does anyone have any idea how these links could have got there & how can I remove them?

Thanks

What did you use to create your sites, was it static HTML or content management system like Wordpress? I think with certain Wordpress themes, they have links at the bottom, it is usually placed there by the folks who created that particular version of Wordpress.

      I use WP.

I had no idea WP did this!

The links are just acting as free back links from my site.

Is there any way to remove them?

Easy, go into your control panel and click on:

        Appearance > Editor

Then on the right there should be a footer file, simply click on that and edit out the links.

Or better yet, set up a link in there to your homepage.

          Thanks.

I've had a look but I'm not great with things like HTML & PHP.

I clicked on "footer" (footer.php) but I don't see the links. I'm using flexibility theme 3 if that makes a difference?

I have my home page link in the footer but these links that I want removed are at the very bottom of the home page below the footer.

It's a condition of using the free version of Flexibility 3 that the advertising links remain in place.

Take the easy option and pay the $47 to get rid of them instead of trying to find them in the files. When paid it gives you the license to use the theme on unlimited sites.

Well worth the money as it's a super theme and very flexible.

Most "free" wordpress themes have links in the footer. That's how you "pay for" the theme, and why people create all these free themes.

With some not-very-sophisticated themes you can just delete the links, but others have them hidden in the code somewhere, and others won't work unless they are present, or there are licensing terms in which you agree to keep the links by using the theme.

Hmm... I think it's the theme sure enough.

I looked on the flexibility theme site & it does mention a little about footer links.

If I buy the paid version it will be link free.

    The question now though...

If I uninstall this theme then reinstall the new theme will I have lost all the content & settings?

No If you install new theme the content and setting will stay there, only some widget at your previous sidebar that will be missing,

Each theme will have its own issues with links, regardless.

That being said, each theme acts independently... so changing the theme would slap you at a fresh looking blog (with all your old content still in place.)

Most themes will have footer links by default, just keep an eye open. Not all themes require them to stay in place, either. The designer slapped the link on it in the case someone is lazy and just sets up a default blog without caring.

If you are using wordpress please check your site directorysite.com/wp-admin/includes/admin.php

you will find a lot of errors. So actually today my site was hacked and i noticed than more than one wordpress blog was hacked and most of them were not using plugins. It seems to be a wp 3.0.1 vulnerability

I don't know how they do it, but links in the WP themes seem to override the 'follow' of other links.

I published an article from someone here and supplied the link back to his site that he requested. (And I was happy to agree.)

When I checked the site in Yahoo site explorer, the link looked like a link to the WP theme. There was no mention of the url on the theme. (!) At least on my site, there was no link to the theme, just to the url.

Totally baffled about how that happens, but I'm not interested in using WP myself, so not going to bother digging out the details. I'll just post it as another reason not to like WP.
