How would you do this right now? (2010-2011)

I would say creating some sort of free product that the person would get for signing up for your list.

Then, send traffic to the squeeze page.

I'd learn how to set up a website. Like twigman said, offer something free like a report/ebook related to your niche and have people opt-in to recieve it.

If you search through the forum a little bit you would see there are several people who have given away video squeeze page templates. So the design process is pretty much already don for you. You just need to focus on something that you can give them for signing up to your list. There are several ways to build your list quickly but all require the ability to give them something in return. They are not going to opt in just because so get them something for free first and for most. Once they are on your list it will be alot easier to get others on your list through your current list.

How I would get my list to build my list is after a few mailings. I would create another free be for them. With that free be I would tell them if they wanted another free be they needed to send visitors to a certain page then comment on my blog with the info on who they sent it to. In return I would send them another free be as was offered to all who did this. Now you just doubled your list from a single mailing with very little work on your part.

Another way to quickly build a list in the IM niche is to run a free WSO, by doing it this way the traffic is more or less assured, and it just comes down to testing your copy and squeeze page/offer to maximize conversions.

Offer value. Give away the best stuff you can find or create. Make it so irresistable that they can't afford to walk away from your optin.

Then get affiliates excited about promoting your offer. You'll be racking up the optins quickly. Also, if you use Aweber or the like, be sure to Twitter and Facebook every newsletter broadcast. I get a small surge in signups on one of my newsletters each time I send a broadcast this way.

For another boost, I would suggest writing a few really great articles and videos for your niche and using the author box to direct to a squeeze page.

Essentially you need a couple things:
    1) FREE giveaway that people actually want
    2) Traffic and Targeted responsive traffic.

Now how do you go about doing that?
-you can write your own ebook in what you focus on. This is great because it'll be unique instead of another junk but can be time consuming. It's useful if you already know the information.
-Get a PLR product to give away
-Buy giveaway rights to a product you liked (This is what I did. Can be costly but when my subscribers add it did pay off eventually for me.)

You don't necessary need to give products though you can have an webinar ect.

Ooh..good thread. Im looking forward into creating my own list as well. Maybe I can start to compile the free ebooks I can give away for free. Actually this is easy as long as you get people who will be interested to read your free ebook. A good place to advertise in are classified ad sites.

If your site is new, try using PPC to drive in targeted traffic and offer FREE things.

Personally I'm trying giving away a free physical product and then doing an upsell of an ebook when they sign up for the free give-away. My hopes are that the ebook will more than pay for the free physical product (cost=$169) and I'll build my list as well.

Got the idea from a freebie (an awesome freebie) in the war room. If you don't belong to the war room you need to sign up. It WEEEELLLL worth the money!

Two-pronged approach - traditional squeeze w/ freebie and 100% commission product.

For the 100% commission product, the main options are $7 Secrets script and RAP. I have both. I use RAP.

So as far as traffic flow goes to your list we're looking at

          -ppc (immediate but expensive)
          -wso (immediate but costs $)
          -seo-ing (long process)

what else as far as driving people to your page?

Split test a squeeze page to a hot product and buy paid traffic to the page. Continue optimizing your squeeze page until your cost per acquisition is around $0.25 per opt-in. Offer a hot related product as a OTO on the thank you page and if you can get enough sales to cover the paid traffic, you can continue to build your list for free by scaling.

That's scary for someone with no / limited budget. What I learned is that if you have no money, stay far away from PPC.

And how did you learn this if you had no money? Just curious

    - JV Events.

    - Solo ads from a decent email marketer.

    - Get affiliates (relies on being able to attract the affiliates in the first place).

    - Provide your services in return for an adswap (if you got no list to leverage or create a website in return for putting your ad on their thank you or download page).

You'll have good days and bad days ... the key is definately to keep going. Imagine you only got 5 subs a day ... that sucks but even if you ground it out for a year you'd have a list of 1,780.

Even if you do nothing but grind it out ... you'll get a list and keep it responsive and invest time in learning email marketing by joining the lists of good email marketers.

Instead of quitting or getting distracted because you don't add 1000 subs in a month.

There are people online who've got nothing to show for themselves and no income after several years trying (I was one).
