Hi

I want to buy Iphones from a guy in UK, he suggested to me to use
western union. Can you guys please check if this is a safe way to
deal with him?

I have never used Western Union before neither.

Below is an email he sent to me as info of how to deal with him safely:
Please check if there's any flaw.

Thanks guys.

Nicolas

----------------------Below is the email he sent me------------------------------------------

Hi Nicholas
we have the one that has been unlocked and the one that has not be unlocked yet
The total amount for 5 units of apple iphone 3G 8GB will cost $2250
i will like to accept bank transfer but it will take about 5 working days for the fund to reflect into our account so there for it is going to slow down the delievery.Lets do it on cash on delievery ..this way, you will take the money to any or western union agent in your area and send it to your husband name or partner's name and address! it to this information below you will have to put a security question and answer so that i will not be able to pick the money cos it is in your husband name or partner, just anyname of your choice

ADDRESS: 50 THURLESTONE ROAD,WEST NORWOOD
CITY: LONDON

POST CODE:SE27 0PE
UNITED KINGDOM

After that come back to me and give me the western union 10 digit control number ,the sender's name and the receiever name, then i will call wesetrn union to confirm if the money is available... it is just to show that a fund as been deposited with them,if yes i will ship immediately and give you the 48 hrs feDex or UPS tracking number, and after you get the phones check them they are okay if you are satisfy with them.. then you will go back to me western union with the receipt and change the name from your husband or partner's name to my real name KEVIN HAWKINS so i can be able to pick the money and you will also give me the text question and answer u make use of. hope i can trust you with this Nicolas.
Thanks and hope to read from you soon

Kevin

Western Union is safe, alright. I've used it quite a number of times. It's fast and it is secured but it is quite expensive because their money transfer charges depends on the amount of money you will be sending. Good luck!

Thats a very typical scam. He's going to mail you an empty box.
Google International Western Union Fraud or Craigs list lap top scam and you'll find that exact same email almost word for word.

Western Union is safe to send money through, but this deal sounds like a scam.

I was thinking the same, too. It sounds very much like a scam. Be careful, Nicolas. If you are going to spend that much amount for iPhones, why don't you just get them from a legit shop?

Western Union is a great way to send money. My wife does it every month to her mom in Chile to pay for her medical expenses.

But never use it when you don't have a relationship that you feel comfortable with.

There simply is no good means of recourse if the deal goes bad.

The same goes for bank to bank wire transfers.

With other payment processing methods - paypal, credit card, etc., you have simple recourse. You just file for a chargeback or similar protection method offered by the middleman service.

        Why deal with the headache?

If the other party is not willing, its time to do your shopping elsewhere.

NEVER USE A MONEY TRANSFER SERVICE LIKE WESTERN UNION TO SEND MONEY TO PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW!

(I hate all caps, but this dude needs to make sure he reads this)

Someone else tell him, before he gets burned!

That's exactly what I was going to say. Nicolas, please don't do this deal. Western Union itself is safe, but don't EVER send money to someone you don't know.

Escrow may be a smarter solution.

But yeah this deal doesn't seem like a 'good' one.

Western Union is the standard way for scammers to get your money because it can't be traced at the other end.

I have a friend of a friend who lost many thousands of dollars on a deal this way.

The federal police didn't even bother to follow up.

Now way to trace the payment.

Walk away from this unless they let you pay in some way the secures your money if they don't deliver (paypal for example).

      Kindest regards,

You can trace it. I trace these scams all the time. Usually it's not cost effective because it costs more to hire me than they got scammed for in the first place but not always.
I had a case where a guy got scammed out of tens of thousands from a sports betting site that appeared to be based out of Dubai. Actually it was run from a hotel in Poland but in the end we were able to trace them to an address in Florida and collect the money the client was out of pocket.
He never got his "winnings" which were in the hundreds of thousands but we got the money he had wired them in order to pay the "taxes and transfer fees".

I agree, it's an obvious scam. Google on some of the key phrases in your email and you'll find many people who've encountered the same thing.

    Just a quick tip...

You posted your question here because something in your brain set off alarm bells. Those bells are there for a reason; to keep you safe.

While there is nothing wrong with asking for an opinion to back up your initial concerns, never dismiss those feelings that something is wrong - Just walk quickly away.

Very well said, Mike. I, too, go with my 1st instinct. You'll feel it when it is not a good deal, when something is wrong. So Nicolas, it's a sign! ::rolleyes:

This has scam written all over it. Western Union is indeed a convenient way of sending money, I've used it several times with no hitch, but I agree that never use WU when sending money to someone you don't personally know.

    Phew!

Nicolas, you're obviously wanting to make a bit of money.

Keep reading this forum. You also must have a little bit of cash lying around if you were going to spend over two grand.

With that kind of money, you could quickly set yourself up online to begin making a bit of income.

There's a learning curve, but even when you mess up, you'll learn more than sending some scamming thief your hard earned cash.

i'm very glad to see you checked here first ... many people get burned by the "well he can't get his hands on the money if it's in someone else's name" thing .... as said above, they can, very easily!!

Honestly dude, I hope you don't have to learn from a bad experience.

I dunno how much you'll make from the phones, but you could make a lot more by learning how to make money online. Especially, when a few dollars in your pocket already.

The other thing which isn't right about this, is the fact that the guy is in the UK.

Selling cheap phones from the UK?

The UK is never cheap for electronics. It's usually marked up heaps!

As someone pointed out, your gut feeling has warned you already.

        Take care,

seriously i would just stay away.

if they keep claiming to be legit order one and the wholesale price and if that comes do what you think is best.

i would force them to use paypal.

  • I have been advised to never deal with western union only vendors. I'm not remembering all of the reasons but they can collect the money and never deliver the goods as promised.

Best to go thru a reliable third party like a clickbank, doba, or other known drop shipper that can act as a "escrow" service ensuring performance from both parties.

He is indeed very persistent. As I have mentioned in my previous post, why don't you just get the phone from a legit shop from your area? That's is the safest way to do it.

But at the end of the day, it really is up to you if you will purchase anything from anyone. You asked for our advise and so we are giving it to you. I'm sure you noticed that no one here advised you to go for it. But if you still want to believe him, then it's up to you. We all could just wish you good luck.
