Do you have the #xfactor...?

To our friends in the USA...

Next year a certain Mr Simon Cowell is bringing his hugely successful format to your TV screens - it's called The XFactor. Think American Idol but with Cowell-esque hype and more premium rate phone voting than you can shake a stick at, iTunes downloads, iPhone apps, merchandise, touring etc, etc, etc.

Here in the UK, the current season of the show is airing on Saturday and Sunday evenings. It's the biggest thing on TV.

As a marketer, it interests me to see how Twitter goes crazy with the #xfactor hash tag every time the show is on. And that got me thinking...

...for fun, I've thought of quite a good way of monetizing this by sneakily posting Tweets with the #xfactor hashtag that contain a link to a site that will magically extract money from the purses and wallets of the teeny-bopper fans of the show.

So here's my question.

How "OK" is it to be blatantly commercial when using Twitter like this? Or would I need to dress up my magic-money-extracting site in a non-commercial way?

Cheers,

Neil
