Is Reference to XP in Domain Name OK?

Hi all, I hope somebody clarify this for me. I have a domain name with the word XP included in it. Is this ok? Or am I infringing on copyright material? I have the domain name already but I've not done anything much with it.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Lydia

XP means Extreme Programming. It is not original to Microsoft, and was in use long before that version of Windows came on the scene.

XP does have a meaning though, in that it's related to software. You may want to see if your use of it in your domain is relevant.

      Hope this helps.

P.S. What I mean by relevant is that - supersoftwarexp.com would make sense. But superrecipesxp.com would not.

If there is a probability that a customer (assume stupidity for the safest result) mistakes your domain for a microsoft domain, then your're toast.

So if it has OS or operating system etc in it, I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole.

But if it is a surfing (or insert random niche here) site such as surfshopXP.com, then you are fine.

I've not seen that usage before. However, it does also means "Extreme Programming" Extreme Programming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Maybe Microsoft had both definitions in mind when they created Windows XP.

I suppose the important question is what would people understand the meaning of XP to be? I may be wrong, but I think most would probably associate it with computers, software, etc,

Looking at the link that Rose provided, it would seem that Microsoft were unable to trademark XP. And that makes sense as the term was already in use long before their OS.
