So, What do you think? 10,000 People Enough?

There's a marketer that I've heard some time ago that said that if you have a list of 10,000, you're set for life.

That made me think and I was just wondering, is this really true for you guys?

I mean, what kind of income can a person expect from a 10,000 people list assuming they all opted in for a free offer and that the marketer has a decent relationship with them?

Thanks,

He probably means you're set for life since you have a huge asset that you can continually add to with adswaps, etc. and you should be making a good income from that list.

Some say expect $1/month from each subscriber so conceivably you could expect $10,000/month from that kind of list but it's really going to vary depending on how you do it and what kind of subscribers you have.

If you just have a 10K list and do nothing but send emails to it and don't grow it at all, then no, you're not set for life as lists do not last forever. A year or less after building that kind of list and sitting back doing nothing but send emails and you would notice a drop in income and subscribers.

It all depends on your relationship with your list.

You simply can't answer that type of question because of the relationship factor.

In the past, I have made 5k from a list of 100 people for one promo. That is because of my relationship with people on my list.

That's really pretty awesome. What is it $50 a sub? Really cool. I think you should set up some type of list relationship training or something like that.

lol No, I won't be doing any list building/relationship training.

My training ebook will contain one line. "Create quality products" Now please send me $47.

I do most of my interactions on a community forum. I don't really send out emails unless I am releasing a product or an upgrade to a product. My list knows I develop quality programs. That has been my main concern since being online.

In fact, I have been working on the same product line for years now.

It is surprisingly easy to stand out in certain markets just because of the quality factor.

  • I am currently working on building my list. I don't think there is a specific number of people to have on your list. I think what ever you can handle is good for you. I always say the more the merrier and the better your income will be as long as you have a decent relationship and good products that people will want. But that is just my opinion.

This is a really good read on the subject of list size:

I would never count on just 10,000 and think I'm set for life...people change email addresses, die, lose interest, etc. We're always adding to our list and trying to take off the ones who aren't gonna be buyers. Keep going for quality list members and you won't have to be so worried about quantity...just what I think!

It is an interesting concept to consider. I completely agree with having to develop and maintain the relationship. Even if you have a boatload of subscribers, what matters most is how much they trust you and care about what you have to say.

Rule of thumb says that you should do at leat $1 per email in your list per month.
This is of course with followup general promotions and frankly it seems more like a nice number than reality.

With launches it's a different matter.

The point is, as usual, how used they are to buy and what is the average price of your products. But I guess that in the IM market with 10.000 responsive people in your list you can be a happy camper even if not a millionaire.

And bear in mind that many people now will sign up for lists with throwaway email addresses and will never see your emails again!!

However, if you had 10,000 people who were not just on your list but you had communicated with in person (or phone/skype), then that would be a very big deal.

    Crap in my opinion.

    The question is all about:

What kind of list is it? Do they love you? Do they engage with you? Do they even notice still you exist?

And even that doesn't mean you'll make GIVE money for your whole life.

I would advise you to always be careful when somebody in business life uses the term "set for life..." because things change very fast.

Yup, it depends on the list and how you define "set for life"...

That line sounds good in a blog post or from the stage flogging a list-building product, but the reality is:

"It ain't the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean..."

If you dig around, you'll find threads with people claiming thousands of names on a list and asking how to get them to spend money. Having a "list of 10,000" may or may not mean anything.

      As for "set for life"?

To me, being set for life means reaching the tipping point where I can't spend it as fast as I make it. Don't get me wrong. It's possible to take almost any amount of money and pull a 'Brewster's Millions' act and end up broke. But most of use end up having a lifestyle that we're generally comfortable with, and maintaining that lifestyle takes a certain amount of money.

If I could shut off the computer forever tomorrow, and still maintain that comfortable lifestyle without actively earning another dollar, I'd consider that "set for life"...

It depends on the Quality of the List, A 1000 Subscribers list of very responsive and hungry buyer is nothing compared with 10,000 spammy list. Hope this helps. Focus on building Targeted Qualified lists and not just any other types of list.
