SEO Elite and Google dancing

Hi all.

I'm pretty frustrated with my latest site. Although I can still be considered a newbie, I've put together 4 websites so far. The first ones had poorly chosen keywords, etc, but I learned a lot from them and was able to get a top 10 ranking for one site just simply using article marketing with SEO Linkvine. And all these older sites climbed the ranks steadily each week.

Two months ago I launched a really nice site in a very competitive niche. I'm targeting a large variety of keywords, with my main keyword (and the one the domain is named after) being one of the (should be) easier ones to get a top 10 listing.

Due to customer service issues, I dropped SEO Linkvine shortly after launching the site and have tried outsourcing some white hat link building (mostly article marketing with some profile and 2.0 links scattered here and there) through a couple of WSO services. I also do a lot of profile linking and social media backlinking work on my own. Two months later and several hundred dollars lighter, my keywords still have yet to climb anywhere. When using SEO Elite 4, I can see that my main keyword either just stays the same (around 125) or drops significantly (around 750). It switches back and forth every couple of days, but it NEVER climbs higher.

And to top it off, despite quite a lot of backlinking to every keyword on the site, SEO Elite refuses to acknowledge virtually no keywords other than my main one. Every now and again it'll give me a rank for one of my other keywords. But, that's short-lived and it won't be able to find the rank the very next day. Now I don't expect that many of my keywords are ranked well at all. I realize it'll take awhile to get where I need to be. However, with software as sophisticated as it is these days, shouldn't SEO Elite at least be able to find where my pages are ranked (even if they're #2,500 or even 250,000)? And shouldn't my pages improve somewhat in rank with all this work? I always had great luck with SEO Linkvine's ranker. It accurately showed improvement all the time.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom as to what's going on here? And can you recommend a good free keyword ranker tool, and possibly a high-quality paid one as well?

Thank you!
