Quitting my Job Thanks to Niche Websites & Google Adsense!! Process Revealed...

Hello Warriors -

I know that success stories can be inspiring to others, so I wanted to share my own. I'm probably a lot like many of you on here; I have been struggling to figure out this internet marketing thing for a number of years.

I tried all sorts of different markets, but I always failed miserably. Then about a year ago, the lightbulb finally went on for me and I realized I was going after markets that were MUCH too competitive. I decided to target small niches that I could rank quickly in Google for.

To make a long story short, I went from earnings $50 a month in Google Adsense to about $5,000 per month now! I also have built over 200 websites in the past year (MUCH of it outsourced). Ever since I have implemented this strategy my income has been growing. I'm now at the point where I am preparing to quit my full-time job so that I can pursue my online business!

Here's is what I do to generate this kind of income:

Choosing a Niche:
  • First, I choose a keyword that gets at least 1,000 EXACT match searches per month (more is better of course)
  • I only choose a keyword if it has a CPC of AT LEAST $1 (typically I like to focus on keywords with a CPC of $2 or more, however, I will accept a $1 if the competition is extremely low).
  • I only choose a keyword if I can rank in the top 10 in Google. Here's some of the major factors to analyze whether or not you can outrank the competition:
    • Pagerank (only important to a certain extent) – I look for a PR of 0 or 1
    • Number of backlinks to site and the resulting page
    • Keywords in the Title
    • Keywords in the domain
    • Root domain or sub-directory page (root domain is stronger)
    • I personally like to find a niche where there are at least 2 results in the top 10 of Google with a PR of 0 AND that also have less than 10 backlinks to the page (you can often find results with NO backlinks to the page).

Domain Name
  • I mostly only buy the exact match domain name of the keyword I am targeting. This is absolutely the best way to go, and it does help your google rankings.
  • Sometimes I will add a prefix or suffix to the domain name if the market is weak.
  • I target 1 main keyword on the website, the same keyword as the domain name.

Building the Site
  • I personally use WordPress, however, there any type of website is fine. Wordpress just makes things easier for me.
  • I typically will start with about 5 ORIGINAL articles on each site. I will add more content as the website proves that its worth the effort and starts ranking better.
  • My most comman adsense placement is a large rectangle just below the title and right justified. I will also place a 160x600 skyscraper in the sidebar, and a link unit near the top navigation bar.

LinkBuilding
  • I will primarily build links by submitting articles. One original article submitted to dozens of article directories can go a long way. I will submit more articles as needed.
  • I will also place articles on Web 2.0 directories if necessary (like Hubpages, Squidoo, etc).
  • I initially used 3waylinks.net solely, but I no longer use this service, simply because its a bit grey hat. However, I think the service certainly still helps, I'm just being cautious.

Repeat the Process

Essentially, that's it! The key to everything is choosing the proper keyword. The ability to analyze the top 10 results in Google can make or break you! If you can get good at choosing low competition keywords, then the rest of the process is much easier (in my opinion).

Anyway, I just wanted to share with all of you my success and excitement as I prepare to quit my full-time job in the next couple of months!

      I don't understand why Google are closing people's Adsense accounts. Surely the more sites that are displaying their ads, the more money they make.

        The kiss of death sounds something like this:

        You attempt to log in to your Adsense account, and you get a cryptic message that the account has been suspended.

        You inquire about the suspension.

        You get a form email back saying that Google has determined that one or more of the sites showing your ads represent a significant risk to their advertisers, so they suspended your account and returned any fees you have earned to the advertisers. The suspension is not reversible.

        They do have an appeals process, which almost always ends up in another form letter stating that while you may or may not have done anything wrong, you still represent a risk to the advertisers so your account remains suspended.

        My account has been suspended for a few years now. It's a long, sad tale I won't bore you with. Just know that my story is not unique...

          Hey John, sorry about your adsense account. Why havent you just created a new business entity and opened an adsense account under that entity? You may not personally be able to ever get an adsense account, but you can certainly open one up under a unique TIN.

          Also, I am well aware of accounts such as yours. I'm certainly preparing for "worst case" scenarios and working to diversify my business.

            A cat which sits on a hot stove will never do it again. The same cat will never sit on a cold stove, either.

            I got my butt burned once, and I didn't fancy having to keep getting new TINs and start over with new sites.

      You're right, it is not good to put all of your eggs in one basket. I would like to point out that most people who get banned from adsense for having a lot of ads on their sites are people who put up really crappy content.... Those x-factor websites are a perfect example of this and there were a LOT of people in this forum that were doing them. They get an exact keyword domain like "greenelfmittens.com" or something (just an example, not a real domain) and then they'll put up a 300-400 word article talking about green elf mittens with a HUGE adsense block and only like 3-5 pages of content. That's not cool. What these searchers were really looking for were green elf mittens to BUY, not some silly little article.

    I was thinking the exact same as @Wide when it comes to having a lot of risk by counting on Google Adsense for every dime of income. So now is the time to look at another business model to build in some safety.

    But you have done REALLY well, nice work.

    I agree with your general philosophy. You do the research, then you spend a bit of money on the site and you don't re-invest until the site proves its worth to you. No point wasting a lot of money if you can't compete for the keyword.

    I outsource this same strategy with product review sites. I only have my staff spend so much time/energy on a project up front. If it gets traffic/sales then we will spend more time on it.

    Great system for marketing anything, don't just use it for Adsense only though - nowt that you have your $5K/month with Adsense, use the little time you have left to find other ways to monetize this same system so that when Google comes along and changes the rules you won't lose it all....

      Thank you all for the kind remarks so far. And yes, I am hearing the words of caution that I should diversify some of my income out of Google Adsense - from several of you. I agree, and have already started that process. Not all of my income comes from Adsense right now, although most of it does.

      I also generate income from clickbank, kontera, infolinks, chitika, amazon associates, ebay partner network, and a couple of other affiliate networks.

      My main focus now is actually taking some of my more successful sites and creating a niche product that I can sell directly to the traffic I am already receiving. This will diversify some of my sites out of Adsense, and should actually increase my income overall.

      However, my basic process of choosing keywords, building the sites, and ranking in Google will essentially remain the same - which is what I have shared here.

          I typically keep the homepage static; although I have blogs in both formats. I insert adsense in each post and on the right sidebar.

          Sometimes I don't add anymore content, it depends on the site. If its doing well, I will only maybe an article or 2 a month. Although I have larger sites that I add articles every week. But for the most part, I am not adding content to most of my sites.

          Yes, I use Market Samurai to get the keyword data. you can get the same data using the Google Adwords Keyword tool. I am also in the process of developing my own keyword tool that will simplify the process for me a little.

          Hey Sharger:
          I use dozens of different adsense templates. The key really isn't the exact template that you use, but how you place your ads, how well they blend in (or stand out), etc. I started out using some of the templates on DoshDosh.com. You can do a quick search for "adsense templates dosh dosh" and you will find a few. Those have great CTRs. Although now I use lots of other templates as well.

      For some of my higher traffic niches, I may be doing this. However, adsense just pays so much more than most of these options. I can easily get paid $1 or $2 per click; whereas many CPA offers pay about the same per completed submission...you will get WAY more clicks on an ad than a completed CPA offer. However, if it makes sense to collect emails in some market you can send repetitive offers...worth testing. The draw of adsense is that its simple and it pays quite well in some niches...

    Why do you target a CPC of $1 or $2? Basically, why that break point?

    On the pages you create, the info you have on there is strictly informative? And you are making money off people clicking away from the page on one of the google ads?

    And why would you add add a prefix or suffix if the market is weak? I would think it would think you would do that if the market is strong.

      Maxmyer, I'm happy to answer your questions.

      First, I target keywords with AT LEASt a CPC of $1. This cuts out a lot of the low paying keywords; to be profitable, you need to focus on some higher paying ads.

      Second, my pages typically are strictly information. Yes, I make money when someone clicks a Google ad and off of my site.

      Finally, having an EXACT match domain (without a prefix or suffix) is the strongest possible domain that you can have. Therefore, you can do better in a strong market with an exact match domain. If I could not get the exact match, I would not go into some market, because they are too competitive. However, if the market is weak; I would consider using a weaker domain (one with a prefix or suffix). Hope that makes sense!

      Of course I have had some bombs! Its impossible to expect anyone to be successful 100% of the time. However, my success rate has certainly improved over time. The criteria I listed in my original post are some things that took a long time to learn and internalize...now I do much better...

    I prefer adsense also because you don't have to wait for someone to buy just click, how many people click on things but don't buy...probably more than the opposite. I am trying some affiliate things but so far I am disappointed, but it has only been about 3 months..so I might just have to give it more time. I do have 1 site made for amazon that I am just waiting to rank for and I am hopeful.

      Keywords can come from everywhere. Sometimes I will go to ebay.com and look at all the categories (thousands of categories). These are some great keywords. I can also find lots of root keywords on Amazon.com.

      However, I have found a few successful markets that I often keep coming back to. Once you find one successful keyword, you can often find a very similar keyword in the same market...this has worked for me on multiple occasions.

      I typically use Market Samurai (free version) to generate additional keywords based on root keyword. You can also use the free Google Adwords keyword tool (which is where market samurai pulls its data anyway).

      Question for you: What do you estimate is your total cost to setup a new site to the point where you sit back and wait to see if it is profitable? My bet is that with domain, articles, and article marketing we're talking $200 or so. Am I correct? So even with a 50% hit rate, (50% sites make money, 50% are garbage), true cost is $400 per working site. To make a payback inside of 6 months you need the site to earn $2 per day. That SHOULD be doable. More correctly, it clearly IS doable since you're doing it. How's my math?
      I have not used UAW, but I have used Article Drip Robot, which I liked alot. Yes, this works.

      5 Articles for site- $5 - 7 apiece ($25 to $35)
      3 Articles for distribution (just an average) - $15
      Total cost of site: $60

      $60 may even be on the high side, as I still do write some of the articles myself every now and again. Really, if my site is earning $15/mth its a keeper.

      For someone starting out, that does the work themselves, they can do this for basically the cost of the domain (plus hosting of course).

        That makes perfect sense to me. I figured you were starting with a bit more content, but on second thought, I suppose it doesn't make sense to over-invest when you are testing a keyword.

        If I was going to use a model like this I would probably want to do the keyword research myself to start, but then I'd teach my guys how to do it and see how well they did. But I'd outsource everything else. I think the costs would be pretty similar. Here's a cut at what I'd expect from a full time worker.

        Cost estimate for the same amount of content would be based on how many days of work each site would require.

        My estimate is 2 days of work for one person to setup the site, write the 5 articles and post to the site, and write the 3 promotion articles and submit them to article directories.

        I would expect to pay an outsourced full time employee about $350 per month. That should technically get you 10 sites per month, so $35 per site plus domain cost = $45.

        If I wanted much higher quality writing, I would probably pay $450-500 per month to a writer instead.

        If I wanted to really scale up the model I would hire one guy to handle keyword research, domain purchases, website setup incuding posting of content. Then I'd hire as many writers as needed to deliver content to the web guy so all they were doing was writing, no web work for the writers.

        Anyway, really love the model you built. Nice job. While you are thinking of diversifying, what are your plans to scale up your outsourcing?

          first off, congrats. I am very jealous. I have just began taking this stuff seriously and enjoy readign people doing so well.

          My question is (and i've asked this of others using similar methods) is how hard do you find it to locate exact match domains nowadays? I've seen many of these methods creep up in the past year or two (Xfactor, clickbump, etc). It seems for the most part most of these sites are having success with a large factor being the exact match domain. Before changes were made to Micro Niche Finder I decided to look for some exact match domains and didn't have much luck finding any > 1,000 exact match. I had some luck with searches being less than 800, but nothing over 1,000. Just curious if you are finding it harder and harder now.

Though my earnings are only 3k/month from this effort, it does pay albeit much slower than targeting lesser competitive keywords.

          Just read your lastest posts about the Google updates. Bummer. I not too long signed up with an Adsense account, and am now scared to use it. I'd hate to put all that effort into it, just to get it pulled down.

          But my question is, how were you getting traffic to your websites? Were you just getting it from Google through high rankings? Or did you use other methods, if so what? Thanks for this post. I downloaded your e-book.

          Still, I can't say that I will never use Adsense, just scared to. I also have an Amazon Associates account that I am not using either. I have been doing this online stuff for 3 months now, and have not made a dime. Is it just me, or is this some tuff stuff that takes newbies a long time to understand?

            It means that you have to have your bait in the water where the fish are if you expect to get a bite. The same goes for Adsense or Amazon - if you never show ads or links, those two programs will never pay you.

            This will increase the visibility in Search Engine. Make sure you add more related keywords to the site. I use Google alerts to get latest update for my niche.

    personally every single time i have ever tried to use google adsense they have let me generate a couple hundred dollars then shut me down and block me saying that i am to high of a risk or some crap. I tried with the Ecig Review site in my signature and Mastering Your Skills and both times they shut me down. I dont think ill ever use google adsense again that are utter garbage. :/

      Don´t quit your job before you have secured your real estate.

      If you haven´t done so already, my nr1 priority at this stage would be to get additional adsense accounts and split up your domains between them. If your current adsense account is private, you can begin by starting a company and getting it an account. Rinse and repeat.

        I am about to build a few more websites to add to my empire and was looking for niches to get into last night. I used this thread as a guide, as I'm always looking for ways to make sites more profitable. I must say, I was online for HOURS trying to find exact match keyword domains that were available in the .com version for keywords that got at least 1,000 exact searches a month and over $1 CPC. I tried dozens and dozens of niches, and it was so hard to find exact match keyword phrase domains that fit this description that were available.

        I did ultimately find 8 of them, after a good 8 hours of searching! I think each time you set out to make several new sites in a row using this method, you need to set aside an entire day to search for your domains. But, I AM looking forward to getting some good results with the 8 that I found!

          Just to clarify, I look for exact match domains with either a .com, .net, or .org. Any of these extensions are just fine. So, if you were only looking for .com domain names and still found 8, that's actually pretty good! Most of my domains are either .net, or .org; because so many of the .coms are already taken.

      Could it be, the reason they have shut you down is due to the subject matter in both of those sites? Does Google want to be associated with that kind of thing? Who knows but you have to wonder considering how many other people are making "bank" from Google.

      What does Google's TOS say in regards to their Adsense program as far as the kinds of sites, material, etc they do not tolerate?

        Market Samurai is good enough. You just need to search for more keywords. I usually check to see what domains are available FIRST, then check the competition. I don't waste my time looking at the competition for keywords if I don't know the domain is available.

        Also, could you give us the URL to just one of your successful sites, so we could see if you're doing pretty much the same as John Xfactor or some unique things...thanks.

        If people aren't finding success, its because they aren't doing it right. The main reason is the first point: they choose a bad niche/keyword. Too many people don't know how to find low competition keywords and fail; that's is by far the main reason, I'm sure.

        Point 2 about themes doesn't matter that much, you can always change your layout later.

        4. Its really not that hard to find these niches. I just found a couple of dozen in the past couple of days.
        5. Adsense is not dead, try it.

        Its all natural search engine traffic; rankings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

        You need to focus on the keyword level, not the niche level. In other words, some niches may GENERALLY pay lower; but an individual keyword within that niche may still meet the criteria. You find this data using the Google Adwords keyword tool or market samurai.

        1. Optimized for related keywords and usually link to homepage (or other pages).
        2. Yes. Its not exact, but around 50-70% of link use exact keyword; they rest should be varied.

          As for thinking of product niches that are currently in demand, that's easy enough with browsing Amazon Bestsellers list or better still, shopping.com's Consumer Demand Index. And with Market Samurai, finding low comp keywords is also a snap. But finding both of these together still does not guarantee success.

          Example: John Xfactor recommended barbecue Grills as a perennial bestseller. My friend quickly found a high-search, low-comp exact-domain-match keyword based around one brand of grills, put up a standard micro-niche Adsense site on that domain with the main product on his home page, and 4 other low-comp grill keywords on 4 inner pages. He submitted several articles to many directories, some about grills, some about unrelated but massive topics (like weight loss) as John Xfatcor suggested for best syndication.
          That was 6 months ago. First 3 months he got 0 clicks. Since then, a total of 16 clicks.
          Obviously, this may be a little trickier than just "follow these basic instructions."

            He really would be crazy to do that. One should never publicly post their niches. He'll immediately get 50 brand new competitors. ( Just like your how your friend went for grills after xfactor said it was a good niche)

                Disagree. Successful marketers show examples of their websites & layout all the time without undermining their own success in the niche...John Xfactor showed many examples in his thread & course, without ruining any of his own conversion rates.
                Maybe that's for marketers who want to get clients. He makes his money with Adsense. What would be his incentive to show his successful sites, and post it on a public forum?
                ( Especially the warrior forum of all places).

                I'm guessing you are you must be relatively new in the IM business. I can completely understand why you would think that way. In the offline world, a marketer would want to show off his work. But a known rule in the IM world, is that an affiliate marketer should never share his niches.

                  Not new. Still disagree...you didn't read what I said. John Xfactor makes money w/Adsense and was not trying to get clients. He put up a "chronicle my success" thread almost exactly like Redfox's here. Went to 1,600 posts and he shared everything freely. Right here on Warrior, of all places. If you are also not "relatively new in the IM business" and your are interested in micro-niche Adsense sites, you couldn't help but have come across that thread.

                  Many, many other examples of people who found a way to post screenshots or URLs of their site structure & layout, without hurting themselves, so people could get clear ideas of best site design for that particular IM stream (that would be the incentive...helping others succeed.)

                  If Redfox doesn't want to do that, that's fine, but let's let him answer for himself.
                  You seem stuck on a position about how certain things are a "known rule" in IM, but I think you just don't know.

                      Seth Stewart I think it's really crazy ask for him to show us one of his sites, especially if he's making money with adsense...I read the whole xfactor thread and he regreted to show up some of his sites in the past and through the whole thread his was saying it wouldn't do that never again to protect his empire...

                        You are using textbroker for your articles...
                        - which plan you go through, the 3 stars,4 stars or 5 stars?
                        - which articles directories you submit your articles?, you said a dozen of directories,could you write down some names for us?
                        - Do you use any backlinks program like Angela or Paul program we can find here on this forum?

      Okay, I didnt do a very good job of answering your question above. I use Market Samurai to just get the keywords. However, I use the free plugin for firefox called SEO for Firefox to analyze the top 10 in Google. You can get it here: SEO for Firefox Extension: Free SEO Toolbar Firefox Browser Plugin . This tool is great and there are other free alternatives as well; one is SEO quake.

        First of all, there is no old or new interface anymore. You can ONLY access the new Google Adwords keyword tool. The old tool has been removed completely. Market Samurai has been updated to pull data from the new tool.

        I still use the 1,000 exact match searches criteria. In fact, the new tool is more accurate. The old tool actually inflated the number because it included the number of searches done on both google AND on search partners websites. The new tool only counts the searches done on Google.com.

        So, in fact a keyword that gets 1000 exact searches on the new tool probably used to be listed as having a much higher search count on the old tool.

          Yes, I did realize that. I guess my question was not phrased properly. I was just wondering if you used 1,000 when it was the old interface and still use 1,000 now that it's the new interface.

          It's probably harder to find 1,000 EXACT, and meet your other criteria now compared to before, but at the same time, you're probably better at keyword research now that you have the experience of so many sites.

      1. The traffic comes from natural search engine traffic from Google, Yahoo, and Bing (for the most part). The articles are used more for back links than for getting traffic.
      2. 400 to 500 typically.
      3. No. 1 article targets the main keyword. The others target related keywords that fit within the general theme of the website.

        Redfox, thanks for sharing your succsseful system. As far as I can see, it is virtually an exact copy of what John Xfactor was touting for his own wildly successful Micro-Niche Adsense thread & course.

        That thread generated tons of posts from some who said, yes this works and I'm making a lot, but many more who said, no, even though you can get these exact-domain sites up to page 1 or 2 quickly, I'm getting little or no clicks or income from them.

        A variety of reasons were offered for why only a few had big success while so many failed:

        1. They chose a bad niche
        2. They didn't use John's exact simple theme, got too creative and made themes that had too much other distractions to the Ad Unit
        3. They didn't do enough article marketing or backlink generating, just hoping the exact-domain was enough to get to pg 1 and start generating lots of traffic
        4. Many found it extremely hard to find exact niches/keywords that had enough searches + low enough competition, or they found a winner and found that there were already 3 other micro-niche Adsense sites in the top-10 ('cause everybody else was doing this, too)
        5. Many insisted Adsense was dead and people don't click those anymore

        So it sounds like you are either doing it "the right way" and avoiding those and other potential game-stoppers, or you've been really lucky. Love to hear your thoughts on this.

        Also, could you give us the URL to just one of your successful sites, so we could see if you're doing pretty much the same as John Xfactor or some unique things...thanks.

    Choosing a Niche:
    • First, I choose a keyword that gets at least 1,000 EXACT match searches per month (more is better of course)
    • I only choose a keyword if it has a CPC of AT LEAST $1 (typically I like to focus on keywords with a CPC of $2 or more, however, I will accept a $1 if the competition is extremely low).
    • I only choose a keyword if I can rank in the top 10 in Google. Here's some of the major factors to analyze whether or not you can outrank the competition:
      • Pagerank (only important to a certain extent) - I look for a PR of 0 or 1
      • Number of backlinks to site and the resulting page
      • Keywords in the Title
      • Keywords in the domain
      • Root domain or sub-directory page (root domain is stronger)
      • I personally like to find a niche where there are at least 2 results in the top 10 of Google with a PR of 0 AND that also have less than 10 backlinks to the page (you can often find results with NO backlinks to the page).


    Domain Name
    • I mostly only buy the exact match domain name of the keyword I am targeting. This is absolutely the best way to go, and it does help your google rankings.
    • Sometimes I will add a prefix or suffix to the domain name if the market is weak.
    • I target 1 main keyword on the website, the same keyword as the domain name.


    Building the Site
    • I personally use WordPress, however, there any type of website is fine. Wordpress just makes things easier for me.
    • I typically will start with about 5 ORIGINAL articles on each site. I will add more content as the website proves that its worth the effort and starts ranking better.
    • My most comman adsense placement is a large rectangle just below the title and right justified. I will also place a 160x600 skyscraper in the sidebar, and a link unit near the top navigation bar.


    LinkBuilding
    • I will primarily build links by submitting articles. One original article submitted to dozens of article directories can go a long way. I will submit more articles as needed.
    • I will also place articles on Web 2.0 directories if necessary (like Hubpages, Squidoo, etc).
    • I initially used 3waylinks.net solely, but I no longer use this service, simply because its a bit grey hat. However, I think the service certainly still helps, I'm just being cautious.


    Repeat the Process


    Essentially, that's it! The key to everything is choosing the proper keyword. The ability to analyze the top 10 results in Google can make or break you! If you can get good at choosing low competition keywords, then the rest of the process is much easier (in my opinion).



    Anyway, I just wanted to share with all of you my success and excitement as I prepare to quit my full-time job in the next couple of months!

      As for thinking of product niches that are currently in demand, that's easy enough with browsing Amazon Bestsellers list or better still, shopping.com's Consumer Demand Index. And with Market Samurai, finding low comp keywords is also a snap. But finding both of these together still does not guarantee success.

      Example: John Xfactor recommended barbecue Grills as a perennial bestseller. My friend quickly found a high-search, low-comp exact-domain-match keyword based around one brand of grills, put up a standard micro-niche Adsense site on that domain with the main product on his home page, and 4 other low-comp grill keywords on 4 inner pages. He submitted several articles to many directories, some about grills, some about unrelated but massive topics (like weight loss) as John Xfatcor suggested for best syndication.
      That was 6 months ago. First 3 months he got 0 clicks. Since then, a total of 16 clicks.
      Obviously, this may be a little trickier than just "follow these basic instructions."
      I disagree STRONGLY with your comment above that says, "And with Market Samurai, finding low comp keywords is also a snap." This is simply NOT the case! It is NOT easy to find low competition keywords unless you know what you are doing, this is why I documented in my original post how to find these keywords. You have to know why the top 10 in Google are ranking and how to determine if you can beat them. The red and green highlighting in Market Samurai does not tell you how to do this.

      So, again I believe your friend is not finding success because he choose a bad niche. First of all, is he ranking? If he is, then he obviously didn't choose a keyword that gets enough traffic. If he is not ranking, he probably choose a keyword that is too difficult to rank for.

      I never said this stuff was easy, but my original post lays out the groundwork for exactly what I am doing.

      This depends on how much the keyword is searched for each month. If you have a keyword that gets around 2500 or more per month, you will start to see some traffic ranking 9 or 10. However, if you keyword only gest 1000 searches per month, you really need to be in the top 5 to see any real traffic.

        Thanks for responding Redfox. I agree, Market Samurai's red/green highlighting does not tell enough...if that's all you look at. Samurai comes with hours of videos and tutorials that DO go into depth about determining whether you can really outrank the top 5-10, and their SEO Comp module, with all the columns turned on, tells a much deeper story.

        I look at all of that, and also factor in the amount anchor-texted backlinks, based on this expert advice from my friend Dan McGonagle:

        "Know this:
        • PR of competitors urls does NOT matter
        • # of backlinks your competitors has doesn't matter...
        • The # of anchor text links with those keywords in there does matter.

        Anyway, that's why I said finding low-comps was a snap w/Market Samurai, if you check ALL their parameters and add a little common sense.

The only example I could find of one of your Adsense sites was the oilcoupon one, and even then I had to search between the lines. I couldn't find a link that said, "Here's an example of some of my niche sites. Is that the only one of your site links you were indicating?

          Yes, I'm glad we agree. I just wanted to point out that it takes some real skill and know-how to analyze your competitors. It appears you know what you are doing; however, too many people just take a look at something "green" in Market Samurai and then wonder why they aren't ranking later on down the road.

      I currently have over 200 websites. Of course some sites do better than others. Some make $20 +/day, while others make less than $1 a day. And of course I have some duds as well that don't really make me anything. However, the upside of my winning sites is so much that the amount "lost" on these under performing sites is negligible.

      For all those who are asking questions, I highly encourage you to buy Spencer's guide. Like the fellow warrior who suggested Spencer's blog, I'm not trying to plug him because I know him, was asked to do so, or have any affiliation.

      And yes, I bought his Long Tail Handbook which is why I'm highly recommending it! It is thorough from start to finish with no fluff or bs, just straight forward knowledge, experience, and step by steps to show you how to make money with this income model.

      Take a break from asking questions here, buy the guide, read it at least twice, read it again =p, then take action step by step. That is how you're going to start making money.

      I am a part time marketer making between 4-5k myself with niche sites. Everything in the guide is what I am currently doing to make my income. So in that regard, i can vouch for what Spencer is sharing. So stop trying to get bits and pieces and go get the whole picture. 27 bones is nothing for what you're going to get.

        Wow!! Thank you so much for the review! As you mentioned, I don't know you and certainly did not ask you to post this. However, I truly appreciate the feedback on the guide. I put A LOT of effort into creating it and did not hold anything back.

        And the fact that you are are more experienced; making $4k to 5K a month should help solidify that this is legit.             I usually do not use brand names. I have in the past without much success. The large majority of my sites do not include a brand name in the domain.

      I have not experimented really with non-standard top level domains. I personally stick with .com, .net, and .orgs. I will add a prefix before I buy a .info or .biz. Like I said though, I haven't really experimented with those.

      It really depends; sometimes as quick as 7 or 10 days; other times it can take a couple of months. Usually somewhere in between is normal.

      I agree, its important to diversify your income. I am looking at ways to move out of adsense such as creating niche products and cpa marketing.

      I use the free version of Market Samurai for keyword research. Then I use the free version of SEO for firefox to analyze the top 10 results in Google.

      I really like the methodology you described. At the same time, I do have a few questions:

      1. Number of words in a domain
      Do you follow any rule in regards with the number of words in a domain name? From my personal experience, I noticed that domains with 2 - 3 words work best, while the domains with 4 - 5 words don't work at all. But it could be just a coincidence. What is your opinion?

      2. Blog Structure
      I personally prefer making blogs with static pages rather then posts. What do you think works better? Or perhaps it doesn't really matter?

      3. Hosting
      How do you manage your hosting? Is it safe to keep all sites on the same hosting account (same IP) or it's better to have several accounts or even 1 site per account?

      4. Update Rate
      if you do not update you sites for a long period of time do you notice any drop in ranking and performance?

      5. Extension
      I was surprised to read that you would add a prefix to the exact keyword rather then going for .info or .biz extension. What about .us and other extensions? Do you believe that .com, .net and .org just naturally rank better?

        1. I agree with your number of words in a domain analysis. I prefer 2 or 3 words and have had great success with 3 word combinations. I have not had good experiences with 4 or more words...they just don't seem to perform as well for some reason.

        2. I use wordpress for all my sites. Some of my homepages are static pages, some are not. I don't think it really matters...both work fine.

        3. Hosting should be spread out on multiple IPs. I originally have all my sites on one hosting account (because I didnt know any better). Now I have multiple IPs/hosting accounts. I think have around 5 to 10 sites on one IP is fine; much more than that starts to get risky in my opinion. Although I do still have hosting with many more domains on it than 10.

        4. Updating is best, but I have not noticed huge drops usually to the sites that I don't update.

        5. I have no real evidence to suggest that a .info or .biz etc wont perform as well. I just personally have always stuck with .com, .net, .org. Experiment and find out...I'm certainly not an authority on that...its just the way I have always done it!

      You can get a fairly good estimate of exact match results on a keyword phrase by simply doing a Google Search with quotes around the search phrase

      Example "weight loss diet"

      To find exact match searches, that is a setting in the free Google Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool on the left column under "Match Types" where you can search for broad, phrase or exact match keyword search estimates.

      Alternatively, you can use Wordtracker or Market Samurai as wel.

        4morereferrals, I really don't know where you want to get with this post...I've just checked his blog out and it seems I found a treasure, this guy is absolutely real and great, his updates are very sincere with amazing advices, everything he's testing and trying he's putting on his blog for free...
        With adsense you don't need make anything wrong to google put you down,he just been very great guy showing what happened with one of his blog which he's thinking that caused some of his blogs been slapped.
        So he made a cool advice and he would try:
        - Not use google analytics,but other tool(there a plenty similar to track)
        - Not submit his blogs to Webmaster tools
        - And finally not put the eggs on the same basket to avoid this problem,he would put just few sites on the same hosting account,using different IPs and nameservers.
        He clarified very well that.But he still are using the same tactic to make loads of money that's why he made this thread after some of his blog been slaped by google,but he's still getting trafic from yahho and bing with this particular site.

        All these guys had the same problem in the past and they strongly advice to never ever use google analytics or webmastertools.

        Oh by the way on his last update on his blog he still wrote he is quitting his job very soon(by february,actually) he still making great money and best of it he's sharing with us his tactics.
        He doesn't need to post here some sites went down...what's the point? we all know sites don't stay forever(there are some,but few)on page 1 and it can drop anytime,especially if you have over 100 sites making money with adsense,this is just "the google power",nothing we can do about it...
        Yes, he's just encouraging loads of people on here,me include to get on page #1, when you get there it's just your choice how you wanna makey money,it can be adsense,cpa,amazon,own product...

        Connect the dots for me - what am I missing here? This is what Im seeing - perhaps i got it all wrong. I look forward to a little more clarification.



        Seems like the real key to success might be to build sites unlike the ones you are making so one's account doesnt get shlapped to google hell ?

        Im glad you have taken an interest in my journey here. First of all, I am in no way trying to mislead people. In fact, I have fully discussed the fact that SOME of my sites have been deindexed by Google. In fact, I discussed that SOME of my sites received this penalty long before I made this thread - Read my blog post May 10, 2010 (6 months before this post) Day 26: Uh-Oh, I’ve Been De-Indexed! | Niche Adsense Challenge.

        My niche websites now are focused on quality and this is the method I teach. Here is a brief breakdown of my timeline that you are so interested in.

        Up until about May 2010 - some site were poor quality (I did have some great quality sites that never got a penalty too). Lets call the low quality sites - batch 1

        May 2010 - till now: I focus on building quality niche websites - Batch 2

        In May, several of my batch 1 websites got deindexed. This caused a change in my strategy - my flight to quality.

        In November, a few more of my sites were deindexed mainly from batch 1 just AFTER I made this post as far as I can tell (maybe the same day? or maybe the day after? I really dont know). However, this time a few of my these sites I was earning more from, so it hurt much more than the first time.

        Also, some of my new sites in batch 2 also received a penalty I conjectured not because of low quality, but because they were associated with my low quality sites and received the same penalty (same hosting, same google adsense, same webmaster tools, same templates).

        However, I have continued to build my business since that time and have new hosting, no webmaster tools, new templates, new everything so I have started fresh. I have received no penalty since diversifying my low quality sites (which I no longer build) and my high quality sites.

        So, that's my story and timeline. I really dont care if anyone buys my ebook, I didnt make this post to do that. I make very little from the ebook compared to my adsense websites. I only sell the book because tons of people have asked for it, and its easy for me to have a book rather than answer everyones individual questions.

        I think the lesson here is that low quality sites dont work. High quality niche sites do. I apologize if somehow I misled someone. However, I have always left a link to my blog which is more than open about my process. I mean if I was really trying to pull the wool over people's eyes, would I tell you that my sites were deindexed from Google 2 times!?

        Anyway, its actually funny that I should see this post again today because I just told my boss today that I am quitting my job to pursue my internet business full time. My websites are making much more now than they ever have. Anyway, its a legit business. I will always be open and honest about my process and hopefully some people benefit from it.

    I'd be careful to not let any of the gloom and doom advice here change what you're doing too much and make you ultra fearful.

    Your system is very similar to mine and since you are creating good content that is of value to the end users you shouldn't have to worry about Google pulling the plug on Adsense.

    That said - it is good to diversify and you should try to promote some good products that match your traffic. You'll make some extra money and maybe even make more than Adsense brings in!

    You say you target one key word, and then you go on to say that you start with five articles. I am assuming that these articles are based on LSI words (phrases) to your main keyword, but the way you wrote it, it sounds like you only target one key word. Could you explain this a little more?

    Do you back link to each of the posts, or just the home page?

      Paul - that's a difficult question to answer. I don't think an average really provides much information. The reason? I have lots of sites that don't do well - (read my previous post about several sites getting deindexed). Then I have lots of sites that make $1 to $2 a day. Then I have 20 or so sites that make $2 to $50 a day. So, the actual average is probably around $2 to $3 a day?

      However, I have about 6 or 7 sites that earn more than $10 a day each. My top site earns around $50/day right now but has earned as much as $100 in a day.

      Anyway, its hard to peg an average, but I like to focus on sites that make at least $10 per day and of course hope for more.

      For the month of January, I made $5,900 from Adsense.

        No worries, its always best to be cautious anyway. I'm really not here to hype my book. I don't want to be one of those guys that makes more money selling "how to" guides than they do from actually "doing".

        A quality site is hard to define I suppose. Every site starts out with 1 page and then grows from there. I initially like to start my sites with 10 pages or so and then grow it systematically over time. Some sites that have potentially will get lots of new content (and I have sites over 100 pages). Some sites NOT showing potential will not get new content. I focus on the winners and sometimes dont worry about the losers.

    Ah, so hardened and cynical this IM business. Can't speak for the OP but nothing he has claimed here is all that unrealistic. Getting one site to earn $5-$10 daily is not too hard, and then it's just a case of scaling up or repeating. Just takes a LITTLE bit of work and that's where most fall down. As for selling a $17 ebook, well, I would rather sell someone else's Clickbank product through my niche sites for a $35 commission. Much less hassle

    Choosing a Niche:
    • First, I choose a keyword that gets at least 1,000 EXACT match searches per month (more is better of course)
    • I only choose a keyword if it has a CPC of AT LEAST $1 (typically I like to focus on keywords with a CPC of $2 or more, however, I will accept a $1 if the competition is extremely low).
    • I only choose a keyword if I can rank in the top 10 in Google. Here's some of the major factors to analyze whether or not you can outrank the competition:
      • Pagerank (only important to a certain extent) - I look for a PR of 0 or 1
      • Number of backlinks to site and the resulting page
      • Keywords in the Title
      • Keywords in the domain
      • Root domain or sub-directory page (root domain is stronger)
      • I personally like to find a niche where there are at least 2 results in the top 10 of Google with a PR of 0 AND that also have less than 10 backlinks to the page (you can often find results with NO backlinks to the page).


    Domain Name
    • I mostly only buy the exact match domain name of the keyword I am targeting. This is absolutely the best way to go, and it does help your google rankings.
    • Sometimes I will add a prefix or suffix to the domain name if the market is weak.
    • I target 1 main keyword on the website, the same keyword as the domain name.


    Building the Site
    • I personally use WordPress, however, there any type of website is fine. Wordpress just makes things easier for me.
    • I typically will start with about 5 ORIGINAL articles on each site. I will add more content as the website proves that its worth the effort and starts ranking better.
    • My most comman adsense placement is a large rectangle just below the title and right justified. I will also place a 160x600 skyscraper in the sidebar, and a link unit near the top navigation bar.


    LinkBuilding
    • I will primarily build links by submitting articles. One original article submitted to dozens of article directories can go a long way. I will submit more articles as needed.
    • I will also place articles on Web 2.0 directories if necessary (like Hubpages, Squidoo, etc).
    • I initially used 3waylinks.net solely, but I no longer use this service, simply because its a bit grey hat. However, I think the service certainly still helps, I'm just being cautious.


    Repeat the Process


    Essentially, that's it! The key to everything is choosing the proper keyword. The ability to analyze the top 10 results in Google can make or break you! If you can get good at choosing low competition keywords, then the rest of the process is much easier (in my opinion).



    Anyway, I just wanted to share with all of you my success and excitement as I prepare to quit my full-time job in the next couple of months!

        It depends of course. But if I choose a good niche with low competition (which sometimes doesnt happen), I can expect to be in the top 20 to 30 within 3 weeks or so. Then with more effort I can crack the top 10 within another 2 or 3 weeks. Sometimes its faster and sometimes its slower. I don't always reach the number one position, in fact I usually don't. However, the timeframe is about the same.

        The expenses are very little. Domains are around $10/yr. Hosting is around $7/mth per account usually - I have multiple. Autoresponder is like $15/mth. Articles are purchased as needed. Linkbuilding is purchased as needed. This is probably one of the highest profit margin businesses you could be in.

      There are lots of great keyword tools out there - the Google Adwords keyword tool is really what I use. However, there are tools like Market Samurai and other that pull from the adwords keyword tool. I only use free tools (other than the tool I created - Long Tail Pro).

    Congratulation, great results! Just one question:

    You said you had about 200 sites - and you set up about 10 sites on each of your servers, just to be on the safe side (in terms of google slaps, etc). This would mean that you needed about 20 different hosting account, which at least cost you 80*20 = $1600 per year.

    Am I on the right track? Also: how do you manage such a roboust system? How do you keep track of rankings, how do you manage the microsites? Or you just create them and leave them as is? Sorry if I ask too much.

    What do you think what are the most important factors that one needs to take into consideration if one does not want his adsense account shut down by google? I believe JohnMcCabe wrote something that his was shut down because of ... something. Can you guys elaborate?

      You said you had about 200 sites - and you set up about 10 sites on each of your servers, just to be on the safe side (in terms of google slaps, etc). This would mean that you needed about 20 different hosting account, which at least cost you 80*20 = $1600 per year.

      Am I on the right track? Also: how do you manage such a roboust system? How do you keep track of rankings, how do you manage the microsites? Or you just create them and leave them as is? Sorry if I ask too much.

      What do you think what are the most important factors that one needs to take into consideration if one does not want his adsense account shut down by google? I believe JohnMcCabe wrote something that his was shut down because of ... something. Can you guys elaborate?

      I recommend that you put around 10 to 20 sites ideally on each server. However, when I first got started I filled up 2 hosting accounts with over 90 sites apiece - bad move! So, now I spread my newer sites on different hostng accounts. So, I have about 5 bluehost accounts (around $7/mth apiece) and then an SEOhosting.com account with multiple IPs (around $35/mth). So, I spend around $70/mth on hosting.

      Most of my sites I do not update. They were built once and don't require any maintenance. I would say for my top 10 sites that earn the most money, I do take a look at monthly to see if I should be adding content or back links - some months I do, and some months I don't. Overall, its very little ongoing maintenance.

      I don't know what you would have to do to have your adsense account shut down - its never happened to me.

      Yes, some of my early sites were deindexed. I discuss this in detail on my blog in my signature, so I wont go into too much detail here. However, since that happened I took the necessary steps to prevent it from happening again. This included having multiple hosting accounts, using new themes on each site, diversifying analytics, and much more. My websites are doing better than ever as of today (Feb 21st, 2011).

      Exactly. I hate the get rich quick hype. And if anyone thinks this method will happen overnight, you are wrong. I took years to build the portfolio of sites that I have today. There is a huge learning curve and most will never get there. However, this is certainly a business that provides some great rewards$ for those who stick with it.

    I have found success in the same exact way... one adsense website at a time

    The thing that I do differently is that I like to promote more than one product at a time, this gives a more authoritarian feel to the site.

    It does take a while for some of the sites to mature, but I have found if you do your keyword research right... a site can come in after about 5 months and start making you $10 average per day.

    Since I haven't worked for anyone for a long time, and came into the internet marketing world from owning a different business... I didn't have the pleasure of working at this part time while still having a boss over my head... lol

    Good job... I bet the 14+ million of unemployed would love to know where you are working and start to apply for the position ASAP!

      Both strategies have advantages and disadvantages. You may have a mixture of the two. That is what I do.

      Steve, great question. I do both. Here is what I mean. I still recommend starting with small niche websites because they are easiest to test and actually rank for targeted keywords. So, start a website with 5 to 10 articles (and do as many as you can handle/afford/want to). After the 5 to 10 articles, I then only build up the sites that are performing well (earning money) or are ranking well in Google. So many of my sites will never receive more content than 5 to 10 articles. However, the "winners" get built into larger authority sites. Does that makes sense?

      So, I have both small micro niche sites (all of my sites start this way), and then I have others that have grown into larger sites.

    I know you mentioned earlier that you put 10 sites on a different ip address. How do you do this? Does that mean you have different hosting companies for every 10 sites you have? I thought the ip address is from your own PC? Can you explain?

      Okay, your own PC does have an IP address, but your websites are not on your PC - they are on servers somewhere else (like Bluehost.com or HostGator.com). Each server has its own ip address as well, or some hosting companies actually get multiple ip addresses, and you can buy packages of these ip's from them. If you look at places like seohosting.com (which is actually hostgator) you can buy packages of multiple ip addresses. Hope that helps.

    Interesting read, i am intending to automate your process from research to domain buying, requesting articles , importing articles , dripping and submitting articles. If anyone has anything that they would most like automating what would it be? i.e this post is old so now perhaps there are other factors to this process such as directory submitting / social bookmarking?

    I am a programmer and love to create robots, beating the captcha and saving hours of time.

    Anyone have any suggestions for what they would like automating?

    captchas, articles, domain buying, website creations (using a WP skeleton) can all be automated.

    Thanks Spencer for the great post on Adsense! I'm thinking of doing an Adsense site to see how it goes, since I put some Adsense on a basic page I have to sell a few mobile accessories and already made a bit of money which I was really surprised about!

    I honestly didn't think people actually click those Adsense ads, but I guess some do, which prompted me to look into it more and if I can make a site that brings in a bit of money each month then why not! It would be great to be able to scale up to the level you're at!
