To get people reading the article, you have to get their attention. This can be done a variety of ways, but having keywords in the title helps quite a lot. Ezinearticle tips will tell you to put the keywords near the beginning of the title. It appears to help when people are scanning lists of available titles, and may help with SEO. Without keywords in the title, your article won't be as likely found in search results.

Once you have your keywords, then it's a matter of making it eye-catching, but at the same time, true to the article. To bring up Ezinearticles again, your article has to meet the promise of the title. Though I would find it silly to begin with, I wouldn't expect an article directory to approve an article titled "Wait, Read This First" because it doesn't have any indications of what the article is about. On the other hand, if the article is on your own blog, then it might get some attention...

Here's how I would write my titles for articles.

(Keyword/Phrase)- (Why they need it and How it helps them)

ie: Turn Water into Beer- Satisfy Your Thirst So You Never Sober Again

or you could do it like this as well

Turn Water into Beer- How Turning Water into Beer Satisfies Your Thirst So You're Never Sober Again

    just my $.02

Alexa's absolutely right. You need to get your target keyword as close to the beginning of your title as possible (which helps for SEO efforts), while also making your title flow naturally.

When it comes to writing titles, there's a fine line between piquing interest and being sensational. You need to grab people's attention; just don't be *too* hyped up. For example, a title like "Making Money Online - How to Be a Millionaire by Friday" is going to turn people off because it's too sensational.

Plus, make sure you're delivering on any promises you make in your title. It may sound obvious, but people want to see that you're delivering the information you promised - quickly. If your title talks about 3 ways to do something, get to the 3 ways early on in your article.

When in doubt, look at your title honestly. If you had hundreds of article titles to choose from, would YOU click on your title? Would it grab YOUR attention?
