BUILDING A LIST - The Most Important Part of ANY Giveaway!!

A client was asking me earlier what is better as a free offering to get list subscribers a video, eBook, software, audio file or something else.

The answer I gave them is simple .... NONE OF THE ABOVE ARE THE BEST GIVEAWAY

If you want people to join your list you need to give them REAL VALUE!

Now if that value is packaged as a PDF, video, MP3 or whatever people will take it from you every day!

Now there is a thing called percieved or added value, whereby you increase the value of something by using presentation ... we have all seen those high ticket product launch fancy sales pages right.

But the value of something should not be in the presentation alone.

Some would argue that a video will always outperform a free report which of course could be true ... but without any genuine value your offering is just noise!

You're right John. It's all about the value.

One thing I don't understand with people is if you have a pdf of something, why the hell not make it into a video series....a voice recording...an exe file...the whole works.

You eliminate the problem with losing subscribers not liking one format over another and you just gave yourself some viral power.

    • I'm a huge fan of video! I ask our clients to make videos all the time as part of free giveaways, content and on their websites.

Video is great because you can break it down and use it in other ways. If it's long, break it into chunks and post it again. Get it transcribed and use as blog posts, or if they're long enough, articles. Break those transcriptions down further and use on social media and tweets or status updates. Content is king and video is great content!!

That's actually a good way of thinking ... I've also a nice give away, but only in 1 format. Thanks for the heads-up!

I get your point. You can do a video talking about how great Megan Fox is but if you said that you can give out her phone number now THAT"s real value ;-)

Absolutely. I started off years ago by giving away PLR and stuff like that. My list became way more responsive when I started giving away my own reports, mp3s, and videos.

Free private memberships work well too. You can have a "secret" section of your blog or an "Inner Circle" that would suggest that you have even more valuable content than the stuff that brought them to your site.

I found that the response rates to emails that come from being a "member" are so much better too.

The best thing to giveaway: a solution to people's
problem. Forget about format, focus on substance.

You are perfectly right. If you don't give real value, the person from your list will not respect you, and you will lose credibility!

According to my split tests, that's false.

The highest converting giveaways are those that tickle curiosity, not those who provide insane value.

Not long ago I read a fantastic example on this regard: imagine you run a golf website. Which of the two giveaways do you reckon would score higher opt-in ratios:
    • "Opt in to watch a 30 minute tutorial video where I explain how to execute the perfect golf swing".
    • "Opt in to watch how I swing the ball through a plywood board!"
Just take a wild guess: which of the two would score higher opt-in ratios?

Conclusion: when it comes to squeeze pages, curiosity >>>> value.

Here's a free PDF I wrote about my findings after having split tested dozens of Squeeze Pages myself: Internet Marketing Reports | Cheap Internet Marketing Tools
