About a year ago I started a blog to write articles on and try and make some money with adsense. I started filling it with content but had to give it up for a while because I was busy with other things. Now that I have the time again, I would like to try and go further with this blog. It has been making on average $1-$4 a month without anything being done to it. It has about 35 articles, some with pictures. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Congratulations on your efforts regarding your blog and your desire to continue with this process. I would like to ask you a few questions about this.

What is the domain name? What types of articles are you writing and how often? Where does it stand in terms of Alexa, Compete, Moz Rankings, or Google Page rank?

I ask because it would be helpful to determine how the blog is ranking after a year.

Also, is the domain name set to expire soon?

It is not uncommon for clients of my company to be in the same situation as you. Getting a look at the back end of a blog/website is important to determine if it coded properly, has keywords, backlinks, and so on. There is a lot to cover, but lots of possibilities as well. That's the most encouraging aspect. Thank you.

The domain is homegrowncnc.com .... It clearly needs a facelift because it is really dark and I want it to feel more open. Currently I am not doing anything to the blog at all. I have a few articles. As for traffic, I believe I have about 800 ad unit impressions/quieries a month...

Maybe some CNC related stuff reviews then link off to Amazon, see if it gives you a better ROI than adwords. Only way to know is to test it.

Theres tons of ways to increase traffic organically and freely. My favorite way to start a nice follower list is to start posting on the major social media sites. Seems like your content is perfect for that!

In fact I do a lot of social media marketing myself if you want to shoot me over and email I can give you some pointers as to getting your articles up on the big sites like Digg.com and StumbleUpon.com where you can see upwards of 20k visitors with one submission. And as long as the content is good I'm sure could be bringing your subscriber number up I'm sure.

We actually have a client right now we've been working with for over a year and has come from 1-2k a day to over 100k a day mostly just with our Digg services and has gotten offers on his site in the millions.

So I can guarantee there are always ways of bringing any site with good content traffic

PM me if you wanna talk more I'm always interested in startup blogs/sites.

The first thing you will need to do is add more content. I know you've got quite a bit on there already, but the search engines love websites that are updated frequently. In fact, every time I add new content to my own site, I see a jump in my rankings, so start your research and get cracking!

Once you get the site looking the way you want it to, I would take advantage of some guest blog opportunities. When you guest blog, you talk to blog owners in your niche about giving them a guest post. They get content for their site, and, in return, you get a link at the bottom of your post (similar to a resource box in an article directory). All you need to do is wow readers with your guest post, and you could wind up with some very loyal new readers.

You'll also need to set up a schedule for your blog that you can stick to - like updating it once a day, once every other day, etc. Once you get traffic, they're going to expect your posts at a certain time/frequency.

Adding fresh relevant content is the best way to revive a blog. Of course you have to promote it but it's much more effective to promote it with fresh content than with old content.
