e book writing - ethics and knowledge

I have read a few of hte ebook topics, where people for a hundred bucks or so can put together a full ebook for you, and from a couple of samples I looked at, they did look and read fantastically.

However, I appreciate that most of you guys are targeting niches to make your money - what about for those that have businesses or are trying to start busineses - eg, where your reputation is on the line - whether you pay someone or write the ebook yourself, if you don't have a qualification in the field is it really ethical to launch and 'sell' your own e book. Perhaps i'm overanalysing, people release published books often without any prior knowledge...?

What you're talking about is the publisher model. It is completely ethical and there is nothing wrong with doing it, and its a great way to market in niches where you don't have any prior knowledge.

Think about it like this. The publisher who sells you your novels, textbooks, and magazines more than likely did not write them himself

So long as the topic is fully researched and provides good content, there is nothing unethical about it.

I don't see it being unethical even if you don't have qualifications in a field.

You can be familiar with the subject through other ways (experienced it etc.) and as long as you're not misrepresenting that you have qualifications, its fine.

    Buyer beware.

I guess it depends on the field but I would think customers wouldn't care as much about your reputation as long as your ebook provides significant value to them.

For example, you could identify and interview a number of experts/authors in the field of cross-stitching, compile those interviews into an ebook, and sell that ebook even if you've never cross-stitched before (although, writing your sales copy may prove to be difficult).

As long as you did proper research in coming up with interview questions which address issues that a lot of cross-stitch hobbyists encounter, your ebook will provide value for the ppl that buy it regardless of your reputation (or lack thereof) in the cross-stitching niche.

      To the OP

People buy e-books to solve a pressing problem. If you have a problem with a tooth and you have been to 6 dentist and you still have the problem. Then you are desperate to fix it. Keep in mind, the problem could be in any niche. (weight loss, health, having babies, etc)

If you know something about the subject and can write then write the book yourself. But if you don't your best bet is to hire someone.
