For those having trouble with multiple copies of the same post appearing (I was getting anything up to 25 at once - what a pain!), if you follow the link Tim Dixon gives above, there are two chunks of code in that thread, one to hack posts.php and one to add to wpomatic.php. I found that I needed to use both to fix the problem.

I have a new auto-blog that I put online Jan. 3rd, in a large niche. My "pages" are some free-to-use articles. However, my "posts" are nothing but automated RSS news items (not using Google Reader method). As of today, this site has 286 pages indexed in Google, and is getting visitors from organic searches. I did nothing more than submit its RSS feed using RSSBot. First indexing appeared last Thursday I believe, which was Jan. 8th (5 days after initial site build).

In fairness though, I've been auto-blogging for several years, and I am running the RSS items through my own software, which strips out some fingerprints. I'm also using my own software to post the items directly into the Wordpress database, rather than rely on a plugin. So the items get "shuffled" before posting, and are posted over time, rather than all at once.

Still though, at least a few pages of your site should be indexed within a week or so of creating the site. You might try submitting the RSS feed manually to a few directories to see if that will get things going.
Thanx for your kind reply.

The funny thing about my situation is that in this blog I had 5 unique articles regularly indexed by Google before changing it to automatic, and now I have just 2 pages indexed (on 30 I submitted via sitemap)...is Google penalizing me for the duplicated content?

Forgive me if I missed reference to this on this thread, but I have been reading on another forum that there is a potential risk when creating muliple autoblogs on the same hosting account for the domains to be sanboxed!?

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this?

Thanks.

It's was originally a term that was usually used to refer to what happens sometimes to a new site in the Google SERPs.

Quite often you will see a new site do well to start off with and then it seems to drop back down the ranks for a while.

Most explanations for this that I've come across seem to be that this is what happens whilst the Google engines are working out where the site should be ranked and so 'sandbox' it for a while.

The best way to a) try and avoid this as much as possible in the first place and b) get out of it if you think you're in it is to just carry on doing what you would normally do - i.e. add content and build links.

Not sure whether having a blog farm all on the same IP which sets off some red flags at Google should be termed 'sandboxed', but then it seem to be used for many things these days.

Take care with this method guys - I've just had my site shut down following a legal request to my hosting company quoting:

This Web site is systematically infringing copyrighted work owned by
XXXX by publishing our entire full-text RSS feed.

Now I've lost access to the unique content that I had built up before I tried this method and only hope my host will remove the block they have put on my domain.

I see 2 lessons there. First, when using a semi-gray hat method like this you should not do it on a domain you can't afford to have shut down. Second, always keep a backup of your own original content to make it easy to reproduce.

In this case, you might want to see if there are cached versions of your older original content so that you have a chance to rescue it.

Thanks!

Ohhh SNAP ... is that a DCMA "slap" or whatever its called?

This is something I have a concern about as well.

Where you giving full links BACK to their blog and credit for the content?

Where you annotating your own comments at all?

What exactly where you doing ?

Ok, I think we need to understand exactly what went wrong here and learn from it. So as Steve has asked, what exactly were you doing?

If for instance you were just publishing someones entire full text feed without their permission, then you do run the possibility of the originators taking action.

Did they contact you first to ask you to remove the content? did you have a means of contacting you on that website?

I've not had any problems with the way I use these systems, but then again I don't use full text feeds.

Please let us all know.

As you all may know, I base my system around using Google Reader to filter what I am posting to my blogs and I mix in some original content, articles from article directories, and also annotate news items to add some value.

I always provide a link back to the original source and because most of the news items are snippets, then that is what gets posted, usually with a personal note attached.

So my sites will be a mix of all sorts and not from one source.

I also make sure I provide a contact email on my site and specifically mention that if a content originator wants me to remove their content from my site then they should contact me at that email address. I think I've only been asked a couple of times if I remember correctly (and of course I removed their content straight away).

That's obviously different to the way Keith has laid it out in this thread, so it would be nice to hear from him. I know there was some discussion about using full text feeds back earlier in the thread so maybe worth having another read through to find his take on it.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that!

As others have mentioned, do you have a backup copy available? If not, definitely search to see if you can find a cached copy of your blog so you can recover your original posts.

Just curious, what did the TOS/TAC say about using the feed? Was there language prohibiting republishing the feed?

Note to all: This is a big detail that may have gotten lost in the shuffle: READ THE TOS/TAC of your source feeds! Know what you're getting yourselves into in terms of using others' feeds. If it's prohibited, I wouldn't chance it, unless you don't mind losing your blog over it.

Cindy

P.S. I've had good luck with WordPress › WP-DB-Backup WordPress Plugins (free wordpress plugin).

Sorry to leave you hanging guys - it was a DMCA complaint and the good news is I removed the content referred to and my host put my site back online so all is not lost.

I found the feed via google blog search - but now I've gone back and done some digging the site itself does say you cannot use the RSS feed in the way we are. So learn from my mistake and read the TOS properly!

Great to hear Mrs S.

As MizzCindy and you have pointed out, it pays to read the ToS if you can find any especially for full text feeds.

HI Keith

I just read about your auto blogging method on WF and found it very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I have tried to share information several times on this forum and was met with the same kind of attitude and attacks for not sharing every single details. So I just stopped posting all together. The last time, I tried to share how I sold 700 $97 products in December and all I got were insults, attacks, and accusing me of trying to sell "the details" ( which I was not).

Keep up the good work!

Jackie

Is anyone else getting the internal server error?

Every time WPOM fetches, I seem to get the error, and my cpanel also shows more running processes than I am allowed.

I actually have to delete the plugin because the fetching will not complete.

Get this...after I delete the plugin and re-install, the fetching actually tries to continue and the site goes back down. That is messed up.

Hi Dave.

I have found that if I have the 'perform pingbacks' option selected on the campaign options tab I get this sort of behaviour, so I recommend to my subscribers not to use that.

As for uninstalling, WPOM actually creates some tables in your Wordpress database and if you de-activate it and remove the directory, it does not remove those tables.

That's why when you re-install/re-activate, it seems to pick up where it left off.

Hi all.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been busy with my sites. I've recently sold a couple, and made a few more using the twitter method I posted above. Those are working REALLY well.

As for the guy who got the DMCA notice, you clearly didn't follow the directions, nor did you take my advice or follow my method. I use snippets, not full content.

If you want to modify the method for your own purposes, that's fine, but don't cry about it and ask me about it like it's a "gotcha" and you've exposed some flaw in my method. I never told you to use full content feeds, and I said you should check TOCs and get permission and all that.

So don't blame me.

As for other folks asking questions, it looks like other helpful folks like Tim (especially Tim) have chimed in, or the answers have been posted before.

By this point, 12 pages in, it's likely that ANY question you have has been answered here already, so PLEASE, before you ask and treat this forum like your personal answer robot, use the navigation and the search and have a look.

Thanks everyone for keeping this thread alive.

I'll be surfacing again soon with some more goodies.

Later!

P.S. If you sent me a PM, I should be getting back to you very shortly.

Thanks Keith,

I am complete newbie to online marketing. I plan to use your "automated system" and I am prepared to do all the research to get it running. Thank for the ideas.

Francis

Thank you very much to Keith and all who contributed to this very informative discussion.

I think the key point here is to concentrate on a certain niche. meaning our site need to concentrate and revolve on a niche. keith did mention this earlier. however finding the right feeds is not that easy. we need to go through all the feeds. most feeds are too general. we need to find a way to filter the feeds.

while searching for the feeds i come across this interesting site. "6 Ways to Filter Your RSS Feeds" I've not tested all the method, but i do believe we can gain something from the methods.

I'll share my finding later. thanks

nothing speaks against making as many sites as you like, various niches. That's what i do.

With autoblogging, a single site MIGHT not make you "millions", and for sure not with adsense. But since it takes not more than 25mins to make a really good looking Ablog, i just make more and more.

The blogs in questions usually revolve around some subject, eg. "fitness", "diets", "remedies", "sports"...etc..etc... so there's a general theme.
