Will this huge increase in trafffic improve my rankings

I am thinking about running a competition to win some of our CDs say to the value of $50

I can upload the competition to several competition websites and I know that I will get hundreds, if not 1000's of visits.

My question is, will this huge increase in traffic do anything at all for my rankings or am I wasting my time?

One thing that could happen is other webmasters might find your competition on these competition websites and link to them from their own websites, which would potentially get you some good backlinks. So yes, depending on how many quality backlinks you get, there is the potential to increase your rankings.

Thanks, that's good enough for me $50 well spent I reckon.

So, you would only consider more traffic and recognition valuable if Google improves your rankings as a result?

I know what you are saying but I do know that the majority of these (compers) don't even look at the site, they almost make a living from entering these things. So, improved Google rankings are my main objective.

You need to refine your plan.

It's a good idea but your trying to reach your objective in the wrong way.

Traffic, on it's own, is not going to improve your rankings.

You want to raise your rankings, well, that is SEO 101. You need backlinks.

Let's look at this from a WP theme developers point of view (since I don't know what your CD's are).

You've developed the super hot premium WP Theme.

You contact a popular web site that is related to development or wordpress etc... You give them a couple of free copies of your theme to run their own competition or they could link to your site running your own competition. Either way, you are getting what you want, a nice juicy backlink to your site + traffic + improved visibility + a stamp of approval from other more reputable sites.

That is how you run this puppy.

Rinse and repeat with the top 10 sites in your niche and all of a sudden the fresh new web developer is the new Studiopress and everyone knows their name.

Don't mess around with those goofy free content competition sites. It's un-targeted traffic who don't care about you or your product and only want more free junk to stuff their hard drives with.

So, take that idea and spin it for your product.

Thanks for taking all that trouble to help me Jason. My knowledge is limited so I need to digest what you are saying.
I have been writing and submitting articles and I am getting some decent numbers of backlinks with these.
