Need help deciding on a VPS provider (down to 2 options with different perks)

here are my choices, and they both have advantages but I dont know which to choose

Inmotion Hosting: best VPS brand, automatic nightly backups, 256mb memory burstable to 1gb (but if you consistently use over 256 they may force you to upgrade, VPS's are "semi-managed" and not fully managed)

vs

Host I Can: 1gb dedicated memory, fully managed (have to pay $10 just for manual back ups, or $60 for automatic!)

So its basically free nightly back ups and the best brand, vs 1gb dedicated memory and fully managed VPS

Both are the same price and I really cannot decide. I will basically be running a wordpress site, using lots of different plugins that will be querying the database, I expect to get between 1000 to 5000 visitors a day. I'm not sure what type of memory load this would be, so I'm scared of the 256 limit. But then again it'd be a pain to forget to backup my site one day and something terrible happens the next...

your help is greatly appreciated!!

Don't just consider price when making your choice. Consider the reputation of the customer service department. I'd pay extra for good customer support any day! I have always received fantastic support from Hostgator.... better than all others that I have tried over the years.

256mb is not much anymore, especially if you use a control panel like cpanel. You want a minimum of 512mb or your VPS may be slow. Also, most offer free backups.

Here's a few more deals to look at: Best value VPS Hosting plans - Web Hosting Diary

ok, thanks. So you think I shouldn't be too worried about the lack of automatic back ups? just back it up myself every few days and it should be fine? I basically already signed up with host i can, but thinking about cancelling due to the lack of auto back ups. they have the best specs from what I've seen.

I've used the following US-based hosts at various times (and for varying periods) over the last few years, and had a good experience with them:

Superb Internet (Managed Hosting | Dedicated Servers | Web Hosting - SUPERB INTERNET: Superb.net) - for dedicated servers and shared hosting only, though they just launched a VPS service, and I've no doubt it's rock-solid and backed up by the same, great customer service I always received.

Web Intellects (Web hosting | Dedicated servers | Website hosting | Managed servers | Virtual private servers) - used them for a VPS. Good service, good support

HostGator (Web Hosting Services, Reseller Hosting, and Dedicated Servers by HostGator) - I have used, and continue to them use them for shared/regular hosting, as a lot of Warriors do, but they do VPS' too, and have brilliant support.

I've heard of Inmotion and visited their site before (I think), but I've never used them, nor do I know anyone who has. HostGator seems about the most popular (by far) around these parts for shared hosting, mind. In the end, all I know is the aforementioned companies have great support and provide a quality, rock-solid service.

Personally, for $40 or $50 per month I would want some kind of auto backups included, even if it's just weekly backups.

But if you've already signed up then give it a few weeks and see how you go.

no control panel and 5k hits per day = 512 MB ram
cpanel and 5k hits per day = 768 MB ram

Add 512+ to create snappier performance

Performance in the VPS realm also depends on drive IO and as such software and web apps, plugins etc that require lots of drive thrashing or context switches can really slow down a VPS based on how the provider designed their storage solution. So even RAM from provider to provider doesnt equate.

Find someone who knows and whose been doing VPS for awhile like myself or PowerVPS, Liquidweb. Hostgator is really late on the VPS game so I can't comment on there service other then to say that I hear more complaints about their VPS then their shared hosting. Going with a big company for a VPS does not improve the service as it all depends on the VPS techs who design and manage the system.

I just read an article the other day about VPS hosting. You can check it out here.

WordPress hosting review: get a good WordPress host! - Yoast

I have no connection to this guy but he's a pretty smart guy that knows what he's talking about. If you're down to 2 hosts, this may not be what you're looking for, but thought I'd put it out there.

There’re many big guys in VPS hosting industry that you can rely on, however according to me, there’re 3 big guys that I usually use to host a large number of websites on them. 3 of them are Godaddy, Vultr and GreenCloudVPS.

With Godaddy, I usually get big discounts via email, the most percent discount I’ve got are 30% off and 25% off on new orders. More, they have a very professional and comfortable control panel that can help me much in domain management. Very easy to transfer or renew when I need to do. When my domains get expiring, I’ve always get notification by them, that’s very good. For their coupons, you can visit here to get Godaddy vps coupon for just only for $1/month

    With Vultr,
They offer SSD VPS at an affordable price, uptime is good. Their customer service is great too. With Vultr, you can create new servers within a minute with the price as low as only $5/month. They also allow hourly billing, which is good for one time experiments where you can launch lots of servers for some period without paying much. Lots of tutorials available to help you out when you're stuck, so even if you're new to server admin stuffs you can easily get things done. For their coupon, you can visit here to get Vultr coupon free $50 for 2 months using.

With GreenCloudVPS, they have a very good and friendly support team that can help you almost instantly, I’ve contact them many times and each time was let me very happy and rate them 5 stars in supporting. GreenCloudVPS also give monthly coupons that can help you save 25% off on your VPS purchasing. Especially with GreenCloudVPS, you can host and run some SEO tools such as GSA, XRumber,...For their coupons, you can visit here to get GreenCloudVPS coupon latest

So I would like to recommend 3 VPS providers above to you. I hope this helps.
