Is the Twitter Experiment Over?

I haven't been on twitter in months.

When I try to go on there, I get the FAIL WHALE every single time!

So, I have given up on it.

Seems like the only thing its good for is getting the news instantly.

I used to be really into using twitter and I got a 18,000 follower base which made me nothing. Lots of robots!

i'd have to agree. i tried in the past different WSOs even on making money with twitter. I have made a few bucks with a twitter sponsored tweet service in the past, selling clickbank products. but never that much. to me it's not worth it. the only social site i use is facebook and that's to see what my friends are doing, not to make money lol.
there may be legit ways to make money with twitter but i'm not aware of any super good tactics for it.

About 1/3 to 1/5th as many followers on line at any given time as a month ago, before they changed the format.

Fail Whale or the CSS file doesn't load. Lots of people just don't bother with it because it fails to load correctly 1 out of 3-5 times!

    They killed themselves.

I am getting the fail whale more and more. It reminds me of DIGG, as in a once great internet site from years ago. This is what happens to companies. They get big fat and sloppy, when they should remain lean and mean.

I am getting the huge twitter fail whale more and more. It does remind me of DIGG, as in a once great internet site from years ago. This is what happens to companies. They get big fat and sloppy, when they should remain lean and mean.

Most people don't use Twitter on the web though, but through phones or other apps where it's integrated. It usually still works there even when you get the fail whale on the web. Many will never notice.

I agree. Most people don't actually go to twitter, but use apps on their phones etc to use twitter. I'm still noticing a lot of people still using twitter through their iphone when commenting over on facebook.

Good riddance to Twitter, I always thought it was stupid and a waste of time. Once the spammers started posting every minute it was over. Bye-bye Birdie!

I think that it is far to soon to write off Twitter. It is definitely a medium that must be considered when organizing a social media campaign. If managed correctly it can be used to push keywords and easily direct users to a content rich page. Of course Facebook still dominates the Social Media scene while adding a link to your name does not add to your SEO Google has been indexing Tweets so twitter pages and in some cases individual tweets will appear in search results.

I use Twitter for branding & networking not to flog for sales. Don't let the bots and spammers chase you away.

If you willy-nilly automate your followers and who you follow then wonder why your 20,0000 "followers" aren't doing much for you and that "twitter is over" well then that's that.

i think the problem is that too many marketers and too many non-human acting entities have created accounts... so like for every...

marketer, tv show, paper, website, band, and so forth on there...

there are like .4-.5 or less humans on there with out a very specific agenda.

Yeah I get the feeling that Twitter is done with, nothing with Twitter has ever worked for me. Besides for celebrities and people like that I just don't think it's worth it.

In my opinion, the real problem with many people using Twitter is that they try to do too much with it. It was conceived as a micro-blogging platform, and as such you have to keep your 140 character tweets punchy with a strong call to action to do something (but not to buy directly!)

The real key is to get your followers off Twitter as quickly as possible to your website, blog, or even Facebook fan page. That's all you really need to do, the heavy lifting isn't done by Twitter here. It just acts as a first point of contact that you can use to funnel followers to your other web properties.

The irony is of course that IM'ers spent two years telling people how to exploit and automate it, and now it is stuffed full of automated crap, people say its useless.

We will never know now because its been completely destroyed by a lot of people in the IM niche.

I don't think the spam and automation is the heart of the problem. The basic problem is that apart from being a great way of disseminating breaking news, Twitter is pretty pointless.

If you weed out all the spam and self promotion, you are mainly left with a bunch of ego maniacs tweeting about what they had breakfast, and what the weather is like in their god-forsaken part of the world.

I mean, who gives a flying monkeys?

If it was really that pointless, why would huge multinational companies like Walmart, Target and GM spend so much time and money crafting social media campaigns for Twitter (and also Facebook)?

It's all in how you use it. If you mass-follow and use automation tools indiscriminately, then you're dead in the water before you even start. You have to have a clear objective in mind with your followers on Twitter, and simply engaging in idle chit chat and conversation is not going to cut it - it is simply a first point of contact, and your real mission is to get them off there to one of your web properties where you can better engage and market to them.

IMO, where twitter failed was by allowing people to follow more people than they could keep up with. Honestly, who can follow thousands of people? Is that even realistic? Is it even possible? Tweets fly by at light speed. 99+ % are garbage. I performed extensive experiments with Twitter for about a month and came to the conclusion that it is a complete waste of time for myself.

One thing I do not have time to do is sit around and tweet conversations with people. Too burdensome. Zero quality. Game over.

I remember years ago when blogging was sidelined as something that nerdy people did to tell others about nerdy things. That was until we learned to harness the marketing power of blogging.

I agree that there are a lot of affiliates that just seem to auto spam Twitter, but you shouldn't write it off just because of that. We need to learn to harness the power of Twitter as an effective marketing tool.

Having 20,000 followers is no guarantee that you will be able to make any money from Twitter. But having 2,000 targeted followers with whom you build relationships with is a doable marketing option.

The thing a lot of IM'ers forget is that people are looking for information, not for products to buy. So when they click on a short link and are suddenly faced with a squeeze page that tells them they can buy the greatest IM product in the market not for $99.00 or the usual price of $69.00 but today for only $47.00 ADD TO CART, it's no wonder why they bounce off.

I tried an experiment with a fairly new Twitter profile of mine where I just Tweeted about my affiliate programs and linked them back to the squeeze page. What a complete waste of time. Hardly any click-throughs and absolutely no sales.

However on my other profiles where I have taken the time to participate in a niche by adding useful tweets, and being generous with information the results have been completely different.

I'm not talking about engaging in conversations, or idle chit-chat, I don't do that. I also don't have time for that. But I do have time to prepare 4 or 5 140 character tweets that I can post throughout the day, just useful information that my followers may find interesting.

If you see yourself appearing on peoples lists or getting re-tweeted you know you're hitting the right notes.

    Chris,

Twitter marketing as sold by most imers may be dead- the fake accounts, the bots did it.

But the potential to use twitter to tap into the mindset of members of a niche is still very powerful.

    Michelle

I use Twitter in a niche I am passionate about and many people respond to me. Twitter is also a gold mine for other reasons: let me just say that you can almost read someone's mind.......I can't reveal more than that about my techniques.

It's unlike that Twitter alone will make someone tons of $ but it is a great combined tool for many things such as branding, traffic, indexing etc. Most people who do mass-follow don't even "get" Twitter to start with so they fail to take advantage of it.

i realised this a year ago or more. why go on twitter and have to deal with thousands of spammy posts and offers, when you can log on to facebook and NOT have all that crap and actually build relationships with people, vendors, etc. question is: whats the next fb and or twitter??!!
