How would I set up wordpress without a website?

How would I go about setting up wordpress without a website? Even though I found a site that only charges like $2 dollars per month and a free 30 day trial, I want to become familiar and setup a website so I can get off the ground right away.

if you want your own self hosted wordpress blog you can purchase a domain. this will cost 2 bux to 12 bux. However you will need hosting to host this blog.

However, you have some options. You can do a google search for 'free hosting' and there are companies that will give you limited hosting for free in exchange for buying a domain name from them. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I have looked into this before.

You could install it locally to play around and get familiar with it using something like Xampp

You misunderstand. I want to setup a wordpress site locally, which means within my network, and since I only have one computer I want it on that computer. Unless, can I setup wordpress on dreamweaver or does it not work that way?

EDIT: thanks jason, what about with dreamweaver?

      Absolutely wrong!
You can NOT edit anything in a theme on your wp.COM blog.

I see that his post just before mine has the same time stamp. Before I posted he did not clarify that he wanted to install locally. In which case I would have to yield to what you stated, Istvan.

Actually, he did. In the title of the thread and in his first sentence. Even if he didn't mention "locally" - there is no other way to "set up WP" without a website.

Let me suggest that your ideas to "get off the ground right away" are going to prevent you from getting off the ground right away.

Downloading, installing, configuring, etc. of xampp and Wordpress on a local machine is a HUGE waste of time. Additionally, the expertise gained in this exercise will probably be wasted as, more than likely, you will never use it again.

Buy a domain name, purchase hosting, install a blog, all in less than 30 minutes. And probably for less than 20 bucks.

This will let you get off the ground right away.

            I'm just saying.

You're welcome. Unfortunately to do a local install of wordpress you'll have to have a local server to install it to. But fortunately this will be useful in the future I'm sure, because then you can run any scripts locally. I really recommend xampp for ease of use, it does make it easy. What you need to do after you've installed it is put the wordpress directory in htdocs folder (this will make sense when you open up the xampp 'server')...actually I've just had a look for a quick tutorial with screenshots rather than me typing it out and this one looks good.

^^ what he said. For local testing install XAMPP on your computer and play with WP (and any other php/mysql type script) as much as you want.

When I design/modify a theme I have WP installed on xampp and in a browser window I have localhost/301/wordpress (=different installs for different versions)
and I edit in PSPad the theme files from that location. Refreshing the browser window always shows my latest modifications.

    ^ This

Hosting is cheap, domains are cheap (or you can even set it up on a subdomain or in a directory). So why not play around with it where you will deploy it - on the live net? You can drag/drop files through an FTP client just like with your file Explorer or Finder. You can load remote files from your web host directly into any decent text editor for editing. There's really little reason to set it all up locally.

If you insist, use XAMPP on Win; if you have a Mac it comes with PHP and MySQL preinstalled, just search for how to activate it.

I use XAMPP all the time to make modifications to WP themes, and test new plugins before I make it live on the web, but I think it is overkill for your purposes. Get a cheap .info domain at Godaddy and register just for a month's hosting there to test it out. You might get similar deals at other hosting companies too.
