Private Members Newsletter or Company Directory for popular finance site

I have a website in the energy finance area – it gets about 6,000 visitors a day on average – the majority from the US and Canada.
I’ve got to take the site in a direction and i’m really not sure which could be the most lucrative.

I could team up with some good fund managers and produce an investment newsletter (it would be a good one – not one of these churn and burn ones the majority of publishers put out)

Or

Create a directory site – where companies, services pay to be listed.

There are pros and cons to both of these options – the membership site means even more content needs to be created and subscribers are a demanding bunch - also there are the added issues of working with partners.

Directories have been done to death – are they past their prime and is it still a viable way to make money?
I could cover a lot of sectors though – all of the commodity from oil and gas to gold and minerals + Finance – so hundreds of thousands of potential customers.

I was wondering which path my fellow warriors would go down.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Directories are "dead" in the sense that there is
very little interest in them. I would go with the
    investment newsletter. Much more profitable.
