Google Dance Nov 2010 - Questions

I'm not sure if I'm the only one affected by this, but I think Google is doing its dance right now.

This is the first time that I know of this happening, or at least the first time I've noticed it, since I started back in June.

I have had page one rankings for at least 20-30 different and unrelated keywords, and overnight they have all dropped to page 2-5, and just like that I've gone from about 2,000 pageviews by 12pm to just under 100.

Is this my new permanent placement, or is Google just doing some housekeeping? I don't really understand what the "Dance" is all about. How long does it last? What do you do to recover when this happens to you?

When content is constantly being created and indexed there's no such thing as permanent placement. Someone could simply be doing a better job SEO wise, and as a result is forcing the rankings to jumble.

Very much doubt it would be this as if it was, the site would vanish of their system, not just slip back a few places.

Just give it a few days and wait until things settle down.

Absolutely not. All I do is write content, and occasionally tweet about it or bookmark it if it is really good stuff. I can't speak for the rest of my site's users, who have authored over 4,000 pages of content, but the things I was ranking for were entirely white-hat and legit.

I'm assuming from the first answer here that I'm not going to "magically" jump back to my first page position - which I was strangely hoping for.

I guess I need to asses my competition and then try to beat them. Can anyone recommend a tool for doing this? I've heard about a firefox plug-in that shows SEO info in a Google search. Should I use that or something else?

I just thought it was weird since it was not gradual - this all happened to me overnight, for tons of pages on my site, with tons of content being pushed back.

I hope I will see things return in a few days - if not, I have to go back to work on old content, which was not part of my business plan. I was hoping to create new content, but honestly, I feel like I must get my previous "money maker" pages to rank well again.

i have had this happen to me a few times on some of my sites, eventually everytime they settled in a new position over time. two sites i had this happen on where i was first page for quite a few weeks, then all of the sudden back down on other pages. i think it was about a week or two after ward they went back to the front page. one of them was ranked higher, one slightly lower. it seems anytime i make a big push on backlinks this happens to any site i'm working on i've noticed. but i'm no expert. it just seems when things jumble around that generally they come back around the same spot or slightly higher or lower. at least, this has been my experience. just give it some time it should all even out.

Many people are mentioning this and I have seen it with my own sites as well. I think the time for the major algorithm update is well due. They have historically always done one before the holidays if I remember correctly.

Don't take my word for it... do your own research.
