If you are a straight face kind of person, then sell with a straight face. If you are smiley face person, then sell with a smile. Don't try and be one if you are the other. People will see right through you.

By the way, I refuse to read your post with an Aussie accent.

Its Okay, I also use Southern accent, so you can read it in that manner.

Well the problem with me is Im a multi-personality person (a broad generalist with a variable behavior) and I am a straight face person as well as I am a smiley face person.

So I was wondering which kind of face should I stress on when selling?

Straight face sells more, by my experience. I used to do the "Hey, how's it going? I'll act like your friend and see if we can strike up a deal" - but it doesn't fly for long. When I used a more stern posture and attitude and sold everything without a smile, is when I started making more money.

Selling cars, I don't know one person making good money as the "smiley face" guy. I tried selling Kirby Vacuums as the happy guy, I didn't make any money. I sold phones as the straight faced guy... and it was the Only way to make money then. The only people you are going to push away with a straight face are the people that don't have the money to buy your product anyways.

I've had more success selling with a 'smiley' face, but that could be because I'm young and straight-face may be odd on a 20-year old.

Smiley face always!! On a side note, learn to move your head up and down when saying something positive or when saying yes, and move your head side to side when saying something with a negative connotation. It amazing how many people answer yes while shaking their head in a negative fashion, we do it unconsciously and send mixed signals.

Definitely a smiley face - in fact I sometimes have to delete some of them in my emails and posts - it's because I am always smiling when I am responding to someone

Smiling with a kiwi accent laced with brit

Straight face definitely people don't want to think a clown is trying to sell them something

The buying mood is a happy mood. I'm not going to say you
have to be a clown to get people to buy but you'll make far more
sales if the prospect smiles or laughs somewhere in your presentation.

Actually I think it depends on the product one is selling. I dont think buying mood is "happy" when a person is buying medicines or tax saving courses.

Smiley face definitely. You don't have to be a clown or get theatrical about, but just having a pleasant smile and demeanor especially when you're trying to sell a high-ticket item makes a world of difference in how many sales you'll get.

I read every post here with an Aussie accent.

As for your question: I prefer straight face, a happy face feels cheap and fake to me. But it's up to you and what product you're selling, really.

Straight face or happy face when selling?

      Neither.

Natural face is the way to go, especially if you naturally adopt multiple attitudes in everyday life.

To use a couple of over-the-top examples, you wouldn't want to sell honeymoon cruises to excited young couples with the somber attitude of a funeral director, nor would you want to sell a bereaved family a coffin like you would a trip on the love boat.

You also want to, if you can pull it off, at least somewhat mirror the demeanor of your prospect. If he's a shake hands and tell me a joke kind of guy, smile. If she's a tight bun (hair, people) and no makeup gal, play it straight.

By the way, I tried reading your posts with a heavy Aussie accent, and I couldn't understand a bloody word... :p

Selling takes personality. So, if you are straight face type of person then use your straight face, but if you can sell with the smile and personality sell with a smile and personality.
