Wordpress Ping Update Services

Fairly frequently, I will see someone offer a tip to another member here about blog writing or marketing their blog. They mention pinging websites when you make a new post, but I don't usually see them give much more information than that. So, I thought I would put together a brief ping guide and invite others to list the update services that they use on their Wordpress blogs.

When you ping a website about a new blog post, you are actually sending that website a notification in XML-RPC format that lets them know you have created or updated a post. These websites will then include your post in their index. This can lead to targeted traffic to your blog and fast indexing of your new posts in search engines. The people that browse ping websites will be able to see your most recent blog posts.

The Wordpress software actually includes an easy way to ping these websites. In the admin area of your Wordpress blog, find 'Settings' in the left-hand menu and then click the 'Writing' sub-menu. On the writing page, you will see a section at the very bottom called 'Update Services'. Simply type your list of websites here that you want to ping your blog updates to. These website address should be entered one per line (or you can just copy and past a list of them into the box). Be sure to 'Save Changes' once you have entered your list. Once you are done, these websites will be "pinged" whenever you write a new blog post or update an existing one.

I would love to hear some input from others out there that use pinging a lot. What update services do you use? Do you think you can reach a point where you are using too many and it may be considered spam?

Here is the current list of update services that I use on most of my Wordpress blogs:

I have a text file available for download on my site that lists all the latest, updated ping services. That way you can just copy and paste it into your Wordpress update/ping services and you're good to go!

And why would you all want to ping so many sites twice???

Despite the claims... there are many duplicate ping services on your lists, guys (and gals).

And before you start arguing, go and check what sites are pinged by pingomatic - the default service in any WP install! Both of you have pingomatic on the list + once again almost all the sites that get updated by them. Why?

That just doesn't make any sense...

Thanks Istvan for beating me to this.

Beyond the fact of the duplicates involved from just using Pingomatic, the rest of them are so old and outdated, they don't even work anymore.

bblog.com as an example has been dead for nearly 5 years. It looks like someone just recently took over that domain, but still, it is not for pinging.

So PLEASE, before you start posting this long, bad, outdated list everywhere, check ALL the links to make sure they are active and remove all the duplicates that already get pinged in Pingomatic. (Of course, then your list will be nice and small)

Having such a large list inside your Wordpress setting really bogs down your blog and cause internal errors. (Check your error log for "timeouts" and "link not found" errors, you will be surprised)
