Guess The Age Of My YouTube Viewers? How About Yours?

Yesterday I asked people on my Twitter account this question...

"What age do you think the average viewer watching MY YouTube videos are".

Overwhelmingly people said anywhere from 18 to young 30's. If I averaged out all the guesses, the average guess would of probably been about 25.

And that's probably a decent guess for most people. After all, I'm kind of silly, drink beer on video, and tend to do things no respectable adult would find interesting right?

BZZZZZZZZZT

Wrong!

In Frank Kern's "Core Influence" he goes through a process about finding out "Who your customers really are".

And his customer is (let me paraphrase from memory)... Bob, a 45 year old insurance agent who makes about 55K a year, and has been at the same job forever. He's married, maybe has two kids, and wears brown dockers.

I may be slightly off but I'm really close.

Of course, he and I have customers from all across the map, different ages, gender etc. But the overwhelming amount of purchasers or prospects are "Bobs".

Well, my target customer isn't too far from Bob. I'll call him Fred. It makes a whole lot of sense for me to really understand Fred. But without paying attention, I could be totally wrong and trying to market to guys in their young 20's. Young 20 somethings are NOT my market, believe it or not.

According to YouTube's "insights" my viewers are as follows....

45% are 45-54
25% are 35-44
13% are 25-34
8% are 55-64
3% are 65 +
3% are 18-24
2% are 13-17

68% are men
32% are women

It's obvious my core audience is not kids. It's older adults who are wanting a change. People who are trying to find retirement alternatives. Guys and gals who want a serious side income.

Now don't get me wrong, I sell plenty of stuff to those in the 20 something crowd, but they are not my main audience. Most of my buyers and prospects are older, and serious, despite what many people would assume. They aren't just kids or young adults laughing at my playful antics.

I'd be curious to hear what other people's demographics and insights are with their YouTube viewers. You may be surprised.

    G`day Jason,

yeah it`s good to know the finer details and honestly, I would have said
there is a lot more in the 35/55 range actively looking for content like
    yours than the younger set.

Notice the 35/55 age range is 70% of the total! ... quite a few have
probably just lost their jobs ... find out those WITH business skills Jason
and you`ll have a nice little moneypit there ... they`ll have MUCH more
chance of succeeding than Joe Blow off the street who just lost a job at
"the factory" don`t you think ...

and those that succeed will buy from you again & again etc etc

      Really interesting post!

It just shows you the power of getting actual data rather than making assumptions.

I've watched a few of your videos and too thought the demographic would've been far younger.

      Cheers,

      Kenneth

Believe it or not Jason, when I first started doing affiliate marketing over 5
years ago, back in the days when I'd include my phone number in my email
ads, most of the people who would call me on the phone were Bob's. I
could count the number of really young people on one hand.

Yes, these are folks who are fed up with where they are and want something
better. Some were actually business owners who might have gone out of
business for various reasons or even blue collar workers who were tired of
      driving a truck.

I used to have some very interesting conversations back in the old days.

So how about the rest of you?

What does your "insights" in YouTube tell you about your visitors. I'd love to hear what others are experiencing. I think it would help us all out the more we share.

Go to quantcast and then type your website in. I believe this data is really accurate, and doesn't totally match up with youtube, but I believe your results.

Is there a way to get insight information for all of your videos collectively or can you only do it for one individual video at a time?

Just wondering because I was gonna stick my stats up too.

            Thanks man

Hmm just checked my yayFOOD account.

    That says 100% female, 100% 25-34.

(Many videos were watched, so it's not like it's all
    one person or something.)

Quantcast says that people that go to my site
(not necessarily watch the video) are:

    40% Male
    60% Female

    34% 18-34
    32% 35-49
    18% 50+
    13% 12-17
    4% 3-11
