My accent or your accent?

Hey warrior's I am planning to make an audio book out of an ebook. but as I am an Indian, I have an Indian accent.

So my question is would you prefer an audio book read by the author in his own accent or read by a native English speaker with US accent.

I'm guessing that the native English speaker will be easier to understand for most US customers, although I haven't heard you speak, of course.

The only exception would be if you're trying to brand yourself personally as part of your marketing -- if the customers are buying the ebook specifically because of your personal brand, it might be jarring to them to hear someone without an Indian accent reading it. But for most cases it might be better to hire someone to read it.

If your English is perfect and you speak well I think it would be find in your accent. I have listened to many Indian speakers online and most of them are just as easy to understand as say someone from the south verse someone from the north here in USA.

I have the same problem. I am South African with an accent and I think people would rather listen to an American accent as most internet marketers are american. But it all depends how good your English is. If you can speak fluently with a clear accent, it should be fine.

I can't judge myself, so if anybody can listen to a 5 min track I recorded and let me know what he thinks it would be kind enough.

I'm facing the very same issue, so perhaps we could swap each other's track and judge :p

You might find EnglishCentral quite useful though, you can practice your pronunciation with listening to videos, repeating and getting an instant feedback...

I know there are a few distinct accents in SA, but to tell the truth, many Americans could not distinguish most of them from an English accent.

Then again, if you have one of those thick Afrikaans accents a lot of people would not be able to understand you. Personally, I think it sounds pretty cool though.

Not a bad idea dude. If you are concerned about it, this would be a good solution. Why don't you just post a quick vid on youtube (with our without the video part) and post in here. That way you can get more than one opinion.

      Hi,

I'd be happy to listen but I'd only be one judge and I'm English so not maybe your target US audience. Where I live there are a large number of Indians so I can understand the accent pretty easily and actually rather like it. I was just invited to a friends Diwali party and had a great time too, food was out of this world!

Anyway, feel free to send it but I reckon an American may be more use to you.
