I would say that you are 10 years too late.

The days when complete beginners can register domains and sell them for good money are long gone.

Buying and selling domain names can be very profitable. However, people lose a lot of money because they don't know what they are doing. As a general rule all the best domains are in the hands of domainers (domain name investors) and whats left is trash.

Start by researching the market to learn what makes a domain name worth money. Read domain name forums such as Namepros.com. Visit DNJournal.com for details of the latest sales prices. Only spend what you can afford to lose. Remember these annual domain name renewals will come around too soon leaving you with a big bill if you are not careful.

This is not an easy way of making money, but if you insist in getting involved, you must, must, must learn this business and what makes a domain name worth money.

      I would totally disagree, sorry.

There is still a massive amount of profit to be had from buying and selling domain names, especially keyword related domains.

In the 'offline' marketing world you can buy keyword rich domains and sell them very easily to local businesses, for example I am currently in Hull (don't ask, even people in the UK don't know where it is!) so I bought usedcarshull.com and sold it to a local car dealer for a profit of £940.

Another domain I bought last week sixpackabs101.com will be sold in a couple of weeks and I expect at least another £1,000, there is a ton of great domains out there.
If you search in this forum for Gene Pimentel he has some fairly good information on this if you are just getting started.

      Kind regards

      John

I absolutely agree with you, John....

not only domains to rent/sell to local businesses but also quality domains you can sell to resellers and end users...

I think Gene would rather have that domain rented though, rather than selling it outright....

      Sorry, I think you're not a domainer.
I believe is good as it was and will remain that way.
To profit from domains, now days, you've to "Think"
out of the box. Forget to use any "magic tools" that
will get you tons of available domains.
The only "tool" that will do it for you is your good old
irreplaceable Brain. Yes, you've to create alternatives.
I was one of those guys around 1999/2000 registering
all kind of domains because they "sounded good" and,
I end up stuck with most of them.
I did have "HairByHair.com" registered for 9 years thinking
was a good porno domain name. Well, what do you know,
I sold it to a Hair Care firm for a good amount.
Through this years, I've developed my own system.
One of the things I learned really fast is that, you have to
establish, lets say $300 to invest in domains. Once you have
reached that amount, you wont buy an other domain until
you at least sold one domain from your portfolio. If a good
domain comes around, well, goes to "Domains To Buy" file
and pray that will remain available when you are ready to
buy it. The pressure you'll be getting not to loose the
domain in question, will drive you to generate ways to sale
it fast. I bet you'll be generating some adrenalin...
I get up every morning and put my rear end on the chair
and start working for long periods of time but, I enjoy it
every minute of it. You have to be able to play around with
words. People go crazy looking for clues indicating where's
that great domain. Domains are right in front of our noses
without any magic. Just read/watch any thing and capture
a word that will lead you to an available domain name for
you right there. As an example, I got an idea reading a post
right here at The Warriors Forum and Free !
      Believe me; it works.

On a slightly unrelated side of things... How do you PROPERLY value what you should charge for the domains you hold?

Domain prices are good as what the other person is willing to pay.
If you ignore this rule, you'll be frustrated more than once.
You must learn to negotiate. You'll learn fast...

The only domains that you may have a chance at are ones geared towards new projects, ideas, products, etc etc.

Like when I heard about the xbox360 kinect i regged kincetusers.com. I havent really dont much with it yet. But I am looking to make a quick turn around on maybe selling the domain when the hype gets bigger.

I still stand by this advice.........

John: You are not a novice. What chance does a beginner have to consistently dig out the gems?

Meharis: You are right. But you need experience to do what you do and I assumed Fazal was relatively new to the industry.

There are no hard and fast rules about domain values. I have found that looking at the sales prices of similar domains can give a ball park figure - see for example DNJournal.com or NameBio.com. But negotiation plays a big part. Knowing who your buyer is, can also make a difference. Domainer to domainer sales are generally lower value than end user sales.

This does not mean there are no good domains available to register. It just means you have to learn about what makes a good domain name and that can take time. For every domainer who instantly 'gets it' and buys winners there are 100 domainers out there with garbage portfolios.

The original poster appeared to be someone who was relatively new to domaining and I think my cautious but positive response was right in this context.
