Hey all, this is my first post and I am stupidly excited that I found this forum. I am just a snot-nosed child when it comes to SEO but I find it very intriguing and I hope to learn more to improve my website which needs a major boost in natural search results and Google PR which is currently O

I just found out how to find approx how many sites are linking into my website.

If I go to google and type in the search field:
link:www, nellyssurplus, com I get only 1 result which is a bunch of bull, I have more pages linking to my site than that.

Here is the kicker, if I type in
Link: www, nellyssurplus, com (please note the space between the semicolon and www)
I get alot more results this way.

My question is, what is the difference between the 2?

(please note that i used "," on the web addresses instead of dots to prevent the message as appearing as a link, please replace the , with a . if you are copying and pasting into google)

Not sure what the difference is, but not all the
pages returned are linked to your site. Some have
the term 'link' or 'links' on them. Some have the web
site domain name, but it is not linked back to your site.

You can do the same on Yahoo. I believe that
    Yahoo shows more links.

I would forget about using Google to show you how many backlinks it has to your site in its index. If you want a very rough guide, use Yahoo.

Search engines will not show us backlinks because it is not in their interest to do so. They spend a fortune spidering and indexing the web each day, so why would they share that sensitive data. Anything they do share, they do it because it benefits them. They share PPC and traffic estimates so adwords clients can put together campaigns. They show competing pages in a search so end users can know how much there is on a particular topic.

Forget the number of backlinks showing up. Focus on rankings instead.
