Google devalues Article Directories

Matt Cutts of Google had the following answer during a Q and A on WebProNews, when asked if links from article directories have recently become devalued when it comes to establishing PR:

"In my experience, not every article directory site is high-quality. Sometimes you see a ton of articles copied all over the place, and it's hard to even find original content on the site. The user experience for a lot of those article directory sites can be pretty bad too. So you'd see users landing on those sorts of pages have a bad experience. If you're thinking of boosting your reputation and getting to be well-known, I might not start as the very first thing with an article directory. Sometimes it's nice to get to be known a little better before jumping in and submitting a ton of articles as the first thing".

WebProNews translated this to mean "yes".

Any comments?

I think this is a good tip because they always says to make our contents as unique as possible to get better results. Isn't the issue of quality? Maybe. I always see some new domains ranks high and says here for several days. Maybe if it is a quality site with several hits can be another point to stay longer.

Knol is the word. Google wants to enter into yet another arena. Expect competitors to get smashed. Maybe that is good for some.

I saw the Wiki-Wack, what happens when you are no longer number one for a keyword because a ten year old wrote a wikipedia article about it. Google was made fun of because of this.

Articles that use to be position five for a keyword are now position 45 for that very same keyword and thus get little traffic. Right now I am getting a lot of traffic from Youtube - a Google product.

It was good to see they affirmed they are not devaluing links in link directories.

They are not devaluing all the article directories. They are having the spam list of article directories and use them to devalue the link in those directories. Hope ezinearticles.com escaped from the list...

Most Article Marketing Directories are of very low quality. Once Google cuts the poor sites out of the mix, then we all will benefit. Too many people trying to write articles in English who grew up in third world countries. They may be able to speak and write English, but they sure don't know how to put feeling into the written word. You guys surely must know what I'm talking about.

I just received a bunch of articles from an article directory to voice into audio files. Unfortunately the English was so poor, that I ended up rewriting everyone of the articles just so they could be voiced.

So I'm glad Google is weeding out the C**P!

I am not sure if he said they devalue all the directories. He only mentions that in his experience not every article directory site is high-quality. So lets hope that Google hasn't yet started to devalue high quality article directories like ezine or helium.
