Facebook is phasing out FBML...

A very interesting article about FBML.

Read about it here.

By the end of this year, we will no longer allow new FBML applications to be created, so all new canvas applications and Page tabs will have to be based on IFrames and our JavaScript SDK.
It seems they will continue to support pages already in place, but perhaps if you're going to build a fan page with Static FBML, you might want to hurry!

I think you'll find that most of his quotes are from the facebook developers blog, so I'm assuming this is straight from them.

What are the best places to use them from?

I guess there has to be some reason for them to use Javascript? or iFrame?

I don't like either of the, as well as FBML. So it's really not a big deal for me, I would have to outsource all of these to a coding professional, I guess.

This is bad news for facebook marketers because we are already used to the way we design pages. Oh well back to square one...

I dont mind they taking the FBML app away, if they allow us to use iframes. Right now, iframes are not allowed. But it says right there that new canvas apps will have to be based on iframes, which means they will allow <iframe> tags.

For me, that's better than FBML because with an iframe I can have MUCH more control over the page.

I wondered when Facebook was going to lower the boom.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to go create a few more fan pages before its too late.

LOL these guys keep changing APIs, don't document
existing interfaces and generally suck at developer
    relations.

I wonder how much time it'll take them to phase out
    iframes.

After reading that article, I'm not sure this is a bad thing for us at all.

Not sure how difficult it will be to use IFRAME on Facebook but it sounds a lot less complicated than using FBML No? what am I missng?

Yeah. Thanks for posting this update. I agree with bertuseng. Many marketers are just starting to get used with FBML and they’re removing it. But since everyone will be back to square one in building their pages, I think it has even out the playing field for all IMs. Well, unless they are also familiar with iFrame.

Introducing iframes could be sexy, it could also be the worst thing in the world if not implemented properly. Think Facebook unending popups and exitpops.

        Agreed; proper implementation is key.

Thanks to the OP for posting this info. I see this as a very good thing for the FB community; (or course more so for FB developers). So much more control over what can be done and done quickly.

The only problem I see for the beginner is authentication; yet, how many DIY small business owners are requiring users to authenticate their fan pages and/or simple fan page apps...

        Can't wait!

Hello brand new realm of problems for Faceboook to deal with....

People will be taking advantage of the ability to iFrame now, like someone said above me, hello popups....

Sad they're going to take away something that allows marketers and businesses to make their FB pages look so much better.

Even with static FBML facebook requires you to host stylesheets and images offsite. I'm guessing that they're moving toward iframes to reduce the load on their servers...

I guess Javascript programmers will be in great demand once this change takes place, lol. I suppose it was only going to be a matter of time, pages using Javascript will probably look slicker and more sophisticated with more functionality, but will require more serious programming/coding to implement.

" but will require more serious programming/coding to implement"

I think that you are Spot on Paulie and that will open a Huge opportunity for the sale of more Fanpage design services- because the DIY business person will be even less inclined to tinker with Java and Iframes.

Plus, with this early, official heads up, fanpage developers and designers now have a legitimate reason to encourage Main Street businesses to move forward quickly on their plans to launch their fanpages before time ticks out on 2010.

I see the glass as half full on this one.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Maybe I'll just look to outsource.

LOL - you're missing the letter "i" in missing! But otherwise I agree with you, what's the big problem here? It actually sounds like some cool pages could be built with this change. So whatever you're missing Rusty is the same thing I'm missing (aside from that letter "i")!

To clarify, these pages will use JavaScript, not Java. A whole world of difference here!

To me this just sounds like FaceBook is evolving and that this will present an excellent opportunity for both developers and marketers to create some dynamic fan pages.
