Activision Says ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Sets Record - BusinessWeek

With all the designers, programmers, and marketers on this forum I think it's time to start a video game company. Who's with me?

To compete with Activision? are you insane? The CoD franchise is extremely well known, and Activision has done most of them. Also Activision has been around for about 5- 6 years. With all the newest video games coming out there are usually 5 -10 other games that don't even make it to market, or if they do they cost the companies more than they make. To get to the point where you can even make 10 million in game launches you need to be extremely nimble, flexible and one of the best. Plus you would need a server farm of pretty large proportions. That being said, it is possible, and IM people are no strangers to hard work. Look at some of these games on Xbox arcade, one was created by two college students.

Activision was alive in the late 70's selling games on the Apple II and Atari 400 & 800....

Challenging Activision would be like challenging an 800lb Gorilla to a fight

I have a plan/dream to make a multiplayer game based on the HL3 engine when its released . My philosophy is to let someone else spend millions creating the game engine then release a free mod to get community support. When it become popular enough pay the various license fees to release a stand alone version of it on Steam.

Too bad I can't play first person shooters - they make me
    nauseous!

I too plan to eventually start a video game company. I'm
a bit more modest though. I want to start with casual games
like the ones you see on Big Fish Games.

    Black Ops is awesome...

Anyway, I think I'd like to have a World Of Warcraft type site where people pay monthly to play.

Video games = escape from reality. Even when money's tight, I always manage to pay my Warcraft subscription!
