Driving traffic to a musician website

Hey Warriors,

I've been getting into consulting musicians on fan management, social media, and internet marketing.

I'm currently working with a very popular national level hip-hop artist who is about to release an album on a major label for the first time.

I've created a social network, built his Facebook page to ~10k fans, and am actively networking with established artists in other markets that we could collaborate with in order to introduce his music to new fans via credible artists that they trust.

He just dropped a teaser single from the new album online, with a video coming Dec 1, and the first major radio single will drop in Dec / Jan.

I'd really love some input on the types of things some of you Warriors would do in order to drive traffic to his website in order to capture as many email subscribers as possible.

Anyone else working with music industry clients?

Greg

This sounds like a fun gig, that's for sure!

Have you ever heard of last.fm? It's very addictive - I'd find a way to put the artist on that site and build a fan base. You may be able to link to the website from there, too. What about MySpace? MySpace is great for music acts. I have an account there devoted to finding new bands to enjoy. I think there is a lot of us that do that.

I'd give away something for free to get sign ups. A ring tone maybe which would be a clip from one of the songs?

Yes, he's a very established artist and has a presence on Facebook, MySpace, Last.fm, and all of the other music sites.

    14k MySpace friends
    10k Facebook fans
    20k iLike fans
    15k Last.fm listeners
    67,000 Imeem plays

MySpace and Facebook are the only 2 sites which we've been really focusing on, however we're going to start building on the other sites as well.

We are offering a great incentive to join the mailing list. A free MP3 plus the chance to win one of 3 signed copies of his new 12".

I'm just sort of looking for some ideas from seasoned Warriors that might help me drive some nice traffic as we're just building the mailing list now.

    Greg,

Increased web traffic does not translate into increased sales.

I have no idea what kind of site the group has, the most effective sites are fan related sites, not other groups.

Play a clip of their music on the site, and for the whole single when they sign up not to a newsletter, (boring) sign up for insider details and goodies.

Create a name the tour contest use PR to get it hyped, winners gets back stage passes etc.

Ariel of Cyber PR is one of the best in the biz, she's usually overbooked but there is lots on her blog about the biz, shes been on the road a lot lately so there should be lots of info about changes in the market.

David Hooper of Music Business radio has good info on promotion, mainly targeted toward getting raving fans and fan support and how to get more income from your gigs etc.

Ariel and David will give you great info about how the industry works in the real world.

The GO TO GUY for indie band promotion is Bob Baker, has all kinds of info about how, and where to promote your projects, (works with indie groups etc)

Bob Baker would be the first stop to get your promotions going on the web. You'll probably want to attend the next workshop that he puts on I think its going to be in June again although it hasn't been officially decided.

Tell any of them that KC Cafe Radio sent you, they'll help ya...

I don't know the first, two, but I had an old, old tape of Bob Baker when I used to play piano with my jazz trio on weekends and his methods worked great. Had more work than I could handle at the time.

So I'm assuming his newer material is superior as well.

    Integrate!!

All of the social media platforms you're using can be integrated together so that your activity on one will automatically populate the others. That's a huge opportunity.

When the first video comes out, post the video on YouTube. When you do, all your audiences on the other platforms will automatically be notified. On the video, put an 10% overlay at the bottom with the website URL listed so viewers can see the URL during the entire video.

I have found that video is the single most effective way for me to drive traffic to my websites. Give it a try!
