How are these back links achieved?

I have just checked out one of my competitors using Backlink Watch.

The site is huge, one of the best I have seen in my category.
hypnoticworld dot com

He has several hundred backlinks to pages on his own site, how is this done?

I am sure that to most on here, the answer is simple, but I am still learning.

A lot of hardwork to get quality backlinks. He could be using sitewide backlinks.

Oh I know it's hard work, I am doing it myself but I wondered how you get links from pages on your own site.

Go to Yahoo and type linkdomain:hypnoticworld.com -site:hypnoticworld.com

This will list his/her backlinks. You can then get the same backlinks.

Yes but Yahoo counts dofollow and nodofollow back links right?

It's as simple as linking between your own pages. They don't help your rankings though so don't go wasting your time making some massive inter-linking mess of your website.

Also I had a good laugh when I saw your competitor is getting a backlink from Wikipedia under "chicken hypnotism." :p

I must admit I didn't see that. The other day, I came across hypnosis for changing the colour of your eyes however, the chicken tops that

If you look at pre-sell pages set up for top Clickbank products you will find that many of the review sites have many dozens (even hundreds) of internal pages each reviewing (and I use that term loosely) an individual product. The pages are interlinked.

I don't know how Google counts such internal links, but they must be of value because many of these sites rely on internal linking for the majority of their back-links. It seems to work. --Mike

I agree Mike. I know one of my competitors that is Google page 1 for a competitive keyword and he has a LOT less backlinks than other sites ranked on the same page. This is what initially caught my interest.

Upon investigation it turns out that many of his "backlinks" are actual pages that are interlinked onsite, and NOT those coming from external sources.

I personally feel that Google would look favourably towards sites that have pages that are interlinked as this would seem more "natural".

      I could be wrong though.

You should spend more time thinking about how you can create content that appeals to online communities who'd give you quality backlinks. In other words, participate in forums, groups on blogging websites, social bookmarking websites, etc. so you can identify with those people, and know what they want rather than trying to blindly take stabs at it.

Q: How do you identify a want?
A: You participate in communities and ask questions like, "Does anybody else blah blah blah?" If it gets a lot of traction then you know it's a common problem, and you should design your content around solving that problem or use it to entertain them by satirizing the situation. You can also identify a want by lurking and taking notes on threads, submissions, etc. that get a ton of traction, but if you want to be rewarded you must be an active community member.

When you're creating content don't think about what "the people" want. Because there's no such thing as "the people", just communities that have already congregated elsewhere on the Internet. If you want to be rewarded with backlinks, sales, emails, or whatever you need to do something positive for those communities.

Interlinking your site pages can bring such backlinks but these are of not much value and somewhere it comes in Onpage optimization.
