How Internet Marketing is like Graffiti

In the graffiti art community everyone is trying to "get up" meaning get their tags (graffiti) in as many places as possible and in places other people think they can't get too.

Internet marketing is the same way.

If you want to become known as a trusted expert, you have to "get up" and be as many places as possible - all the time...

You need to be:
on the forums
on facebook and twitter
have a blog
guest post on other people's blog
email your list
get others to email their list about you

BE EVERYWHERE - ALL THE TIME.

      I agree with you, but you have to have content out, before you can become "scare"

      I mean by what you wrote a newbie would be an expert...
      they're scarce (because they don't "get up"
      they're hard to get a hold of (because no one knows who they are)
      doesn't matter what they charge because no one knows who they are

      ... get what I mean? You still have to get people talking ABOUT you. .. It's true you don't have to be Gary V and be everywhere... but you have to put out so much awesome stuff that people at least talk about you.

    There's a lot to be said for that - the more places people see you come up, the more credibility you build, even subconsciously. They'll start feeling like "hey, I've heard of this guy" even if the places they heard of you weren't necessarily authoritative. The more times they hear your name, the more places they see your content, the more receptive they will be to your message.

    I really like your idea. What I think is interesting is what happens if you do it strategically (5 posts per day, 3 tweets, 10 blog comments, etc) and you get this done every day.

    The sheer volume just by putting out 10 blog comments per day (maybe 30-45 minutes a day) is 3,650 per year. Even if you don't get people "clicking" on your link in the comment, you'll get the attention of the blogger who's blog you're commenting on. This is a great networking tool and the TRUE value of blog commenting.

    Internet marketing is like graffiti like you say...interesting analogy.

    Combine the idea with a strategic implementation and you're gold.

      In the part of the world I am in there is a graffiti artist called 'Banksy'. I am sure with the same version of the Internet Marketer, he or she would not have to put their signature all over the place. With a few links here and there, Google and co. would go to would go to all sorts of extent to accomodate and serve them.

    Hey Inter ... I'm a big fan of banksy he does great stencil work (him and shepard fairey are probably my favorite street artists)... but I'm not to sure about the point your making. Care to clarify?

    Not only you have to get it up there, your graffiti must actually be GOOD. I think the same applies to internet marketing.

      Awesome point.

      If you're work is crap, you'll be seen as "devaluing the real estate" ... that applies to both IM and street art.

      ...But if your work is good, you're considered an artist

    Both strategies can work. Both require
    lots of labor.

    Depth vs Width
    Quality vs Quantity

    Most marketers opt for Width because
    it doesn't require greatness.

    I also like the concept of being everywhere especially since you're building popularity for your business. However, it's also important to include credibility together with your presence online to be followed by others.

      You are totally right Jon, credibility is HUGE.

      But by being everywhere - you ARE GAINING CREDIBILITY.

      As an example, I recently did a guest video post on rinf.com (as of right now it is still featured above the fold on their front page). Having been featured on a blog that gets about 40k uniques a month I have gained even more credibility and am now doing even more guest video posts on equally as big blogs.
