Best Free way to build up a double opt in list in Wordpress?

hey guys, what's the best plugin to use to just simply build up a list? I guess whenever I'm ready to start sending I can sign up with Aweber, but just to start gathering emails, whats the best thing to use? Should I do a pop up that greys out the whole screen? Or just have a sign up form in my widget side bar? And either way, what plugin should I use?

thanks for any help

You don't need a plugin to stick the aweber form on the sidebar, just drag a text widget into the sidebar and stick the raw html code in it. I tested forced optin and sidebar optin, I found out that I get far more optins via the sidebar. When you have useful content, you don't need annoying popups, people will sign up using the sidebar. See the first link in my sig for the visual example.

You can't just collect addresses via a plugin and then start sending out emails "when you're ready" via Aweber. They won't allow it. Sign up with Aweber (or your mailing list manager of choice) now and they will give you all the tools you need, including forms. No plugins required.

    That will be too late.

You'll already have some email addresses by that stage.

Don't expect to be able to import them into Aweber without them all opting in all over again (which may lose most of them, especially if you haven't been in touch with them regularly). Besides which, if you're building a list, you need to send the first autoresponder email to each person ten seconds after they sign up, and the next one not long after, otherwise your list won't be worth very much.

The time to start using an autoresponder service is the day before you collect your first email address, not the day after.

That kind may collect a few more "de novo visitors" than other kinds. But it also loses a lot more, because of all the people who would otherwise have returned to your site and signed up later, but see that and never come back again. It's not necessarily so easy to allow for all those, when you're testing.

I've always done better with those, myself. But my visitors don't like squeeze pages and pop-ups. Yours may be different.
