No worries, joadcrank. I hope it helps your friend a little. The book is really basic and just gives a complete newbie an idea of what to expect. There are no instructions as such and the reader would have to research further to really get started.

It's not much for all the experts out there but maybe it will help some newbies out there.

This is very cool of you, it's very refreshing to see a straight up newbie advice guide without any kind of marketing angle going on with it. A lot of what you wrote hit home with me.

I've only been at this for a few weeks and I'm already very disorganized; my 50+ passwords/logins are all scribbled on a piece of scrap paper front and back, almost impossible to decipher. Same thing with my market research, it's just all over the place. I'm like you in that I prefer physically writing things down compared to having a text file, so I just dug out a notebook that I'm going to start using. I also just installed Open Office because I'm sure spreadsheets can be helpful, too.

I'm also obsessed with checking my Google rankings/analytics, backlink sites, etc. You're totally right that it ends up consuming a ton of time and isn't accomplishing anything at all. Time to take this a lot more seriously

Thank you for sharing this - getting the right mindset is a crucial part of any business success and it is great that you have put together some great thoughts and ideas to get any newbie started - I loved reading it

I am glad the book helped you some. I totally understand where your coming from. When I first started out there were a ton of books for newbies but they kind of skipped all the REALLY basic stuff and cut straight to the IM work. Great for a newbie who has a little idea about IM and computing but not so great for the complete newbie!

Of course, in time I figured all the basic stuff out but I remember how frustrating it was.

My book is very simply what to expect when starting IM. No flash systems to internet riches, no product links, no email lists. Just information I picked up in my short time as an IMer. Information that will hopefully point any newbies out there in the right direction for their start in this industry.

Yes, any good Office program will help you to get organized. Learn to build spreadsheets for different areas of your work and save them in one big folder.

All my passwords/usernames/urls,etc are put into their own categorized spreadsheet. So I will have sheets for Social Bookmarking, Web 2.0 Sites, Article Directories, RSS Sites,etc.

Checking your stats on a TOO regular basis is normal at the start. I did it and I am sure many others did it too. What you have to remember is that results from your work very rarely happen immediately. With IM you need to learn to be patient. Let Google do its thing.
In the mean time, get into the habit of taking more action and doing your stat checks after all your days work is done.
