What is better for list building? Selling the Newsletter or giving it away?

Ok, so for my website I want a newsletter. I was going to put it along with member content so people would have to pay for it, but now Im not so sure what to do after reading up on list building. So I'm not sure what I would profit from more, giving away a newsletter or selling it. Any Ideas?

    It depends on your business. If you already have a lot of traffic and a loyal following, you could probably charge for additional content that is above and beyond your regular info.... but if you're just starting out and not an authority - it's going to be a tough sell (to put it nicely).

    makes sense. I guess I am going to have to build up my site before I start selling content then. How would I distinguish the paid content from the regular content though?

    Free = more subscribers

    So if more subscribers is "better for list building" that would be your answer . . .

    I think you should offer it for free to build your list and then segment that list into a paid list which get more content . . .

    A paid or buyers list doesn't have to be someone paying to read your emails, but can be people who have bought an ebook you created or some other product from you. . .

    If you give good content to the free list they should easily turn into buyers . . .
