Membership Site - Whats the best way?

Hey,

So I am making a product but its turning out to be many many hours of video. I am thinking the only way to present it nicely will be to host it all up on a site.

I dont plan to charge recurring rev (or maybe I should?) but just feel it is too much information for people to just download at once...

what is the best / easiest way to set up a membership site?

Do I do it on wordpress?

How do I give people automatic logins once they purchase?

Thx in adv!

Did you check out the all-in-one thread about membership sites? There's over 100 posts there about it.

If you haven't you can get to it by running a tag search for "allinone"

    Use wordpress.

    Use the Wishlist plugin.

It's simple and quick - I just did the same thing recently and it's working great.

I have built and installed a few membership sites and I like Digital Access Pass or DAP. Works great with Wordpress. They have a true drip feature that you can drip by time, clicks, views, etc. What sold me is their one click up-sell feature. That feature alone will definitely add more money to your pocket.

The way I host my videos is by using Amazon S3 and then use the FLV-embed plugin for Wordpress. That way your videos are secured and you don't have any issues with bandwidth or streaming. Hope that helps you out some.

Using wishlist, I set up my sales pages on html pages and not on the wishlist site itself.

I use wishlist purely for members to access the content. I have 2 sales page.. one via paypal and one for CB which is to attract affiliates.

      Cheers.

    here is my advice...

    Stay away from WishList member.

It pales in comparison to Digital Access Pass (DAP)

DAP will allow you to do everything that WishList member does and it does it better.

Trust me, I have used them both and every time I have used WishList member I practically put my head through the window because it was so frustrating.

Nothing seemed to work right, and it put unbearable loads on my server.

Then, I switched to DAP and putting together membership sites has never been easier.

Plus DAP has one click upsell's, built-in affiliate program, built in true drip technology, and much much more.

Now, for your videos I would suggest posting them on Amazon S3.

Then, go and grab the Easy Video Player by Josh Bartlett. Then, you can use DAP on WordPress to create a secure membership site.

Then, with DAP you can drip the content out over a period of time.

    Talk soon,

      Hi Shannon,

I'd be interested to hear what problems you had - I switched to Wishlist recently and it's been a dream. I just launched a new membership and it's already got over 200 members and no problems at with Wishlist.

Shannon, would you recommend any free alternatives to any of those plugins for wordpress? I'm running very low on money and am almost done creating my membership site, and I have no idea how to protect my content so far...

Unfortunately, I have not used any free plug-ins. So, I really can't give you advice on that.

Not sure if this helps, but...

Depending on your set up for the content, the cheapest way to get this started is to set up a sequential autoresponder series what goes out on predetermined days.

Each email sends them to a unique download page for each lot of content. This is a very primitive approach, but it served me well when I created my first membership site... and cost me peanuts to set up.

Then once you have some $$ coming in, you can upgrade to a script.

BTW, I don't use wishlist as a traditional membership site, so I should be upfront about it. My site is purely download. So I cannot comment on content protection. Having said that, it does have it's limitations. My biggest bug bear is having to unsubscribe members manually.

I am in the process of relaunching with DAP also, so it should be good. Yes, the one-click upsell should be fun.

          Hope this helps.

        Hey Andy,

It is the way that WishList works that drove me bonkers. They do a very poor job at actually hiding the post.

For example, I use the headway theme for all of my sites. It is very customizable.

So, I can make a page that shows posts by category.

Now, even though I protect the posts they will still show up in that category when they should not be shown.

Now, they are actually protected because when someone clicks on the actual post they are taken to the sales page. But, they should not see it at all.

And I also had the settings set right so that was not supposed to happen.

Also, WishList member does not have a true drip function. In order to drip out posts you need to make a member level for each post you want to drip out.

So, if I want to drip one post per day for an entire year I would need 365 member levels.

Plus, the version I was using, this may be fixed now, put in extreme load on my server. Which is never good.

Then, I needed to deactivate the plug-in to test a different plug-in set up and when I re-activated the plug-in it wiped out my entire blog.

I did some research and found out I was not the only one that happened to.

I could really go on and on about everything I did not like go about WishList.

I am not saying that WishList does not work and that it is not a solution for some people. But, if you want a true all-in-one solution for running a membership site inside of WordPress DAP is the way to go.

          Thanks.

I haven't had those problems as I'm not using posts (only pages) and they do get hidden from menus etc. if I select and I'm not drip-feeding either.

So maybe I've just been lucky but I've been really happy with how quick, simple and reliable it's been.

I did have an issue with memory when I first got a bunch of traffic to the site but a quick tweak to the memory allocated and that cleared up and has been fine ever since.

I'm not inclined to change now since everything is working fine but I'll keep DAP in mind so thanks for the recommendation.

    He Shanon,

Thanks for the help. Optimize Press works with DAP too. This I think has changed my mind because I was going to go with wishlist.

    Does DAP integrate with clickbank?

    Cheers,

Yes, DAP integrates perfectly with ClickBank. But, if I was you I would save yourself on the clickbank fees and just run your affiliate program through DAP

This is a question I am still agonising over, what solution or combination of solutions to go for. I understood DAP has a good sales functionality, like for selling additional products to your members (not just the initial subscription), does Wishlist have those kinds of features? I have waded through the features list of both but can't really get my head round it.

I started with a simply forum, i got people to opt into my with a free product...the in my pdf i redirected them to my forum for free. got it buzzing, and even other people from well known forums.

Once it was buzzing I started charging a small 9.95 and got about 100 members by my 2nd month. it was amazing and how I started online. They are simple, but you have to make sure you have a good nice niche.

Do not make it complex, like I said I would start with a simple forum which is FREE, and comes with your hosting Cpanel account that you yourself can install. It takes like 2 mins and is all push button.

I say start off small first and work your way up to the bigger more complex membership sites.

Lol, I bit off quite alot I think for my first product. Turned out to be about 10 hours of video content...
