HostGator subdomains -- Quick question

Please forgive my ignorance. I'm a techno-dunce and forcing myself to learn about my HostGator C-panel, which means I've screwed some stuff up but was able to fix a few things after watching YouTube videos created by a few Warriors.

Now I'm stuck on a little problem with my HostGator subdomains.

Here's the deal. *** NOTE: The URLs that I've listed below are not mine. I was trying to think of easy, generic example URLs to use as I explained this, and then (techie-tard that I am) I discovered after I posted this that they turned blue and linked to somewhere. So just ignore the sites they go to. ***

Let's say I've got my main URL set up as www.mainurl.com.

Now I've gone into NameCheap to fix my DNS and for several other URLs that I've purchased. I've got additionaldomain.com, yetanotherdomain.com, etc.

When I check on what I set up when I was playing around in HostGator, here's how these domains appear.

SUBDOMAIN ROOT DOMAIN

additionaldomain .mainurl.com
yetanotherdomain .mainurl.com

So did I screw this up? Does this mean I won't be able to set up WordPress for www.additionaldomain.com and www.yetanotherdomain.com to be on their own? They would each, instead, be:

additionaldomain.mainurl.com
yetanotherdomain.mainurl.com

I tried to delete each of these in the Subdomain page so I could start over with a clean slate, and I got this message:

"There was a problem removing the subdomain additionaldomain.mainurl.com
Sorry, the subdomain additionaldomain cannot be removed because it is linked to the addon domain additionaldomain.com. You must first remove the addon domain."

OK. So I went to the Add-On Domain page and deleted additionaldomain.com.

Then I went back to the Subdomain page to check, and (voila!) additionaldomain.mainurl.com is gone.

Maybe I'm just not understand the difference between subdomains and additional domains.

I was thinking a SUBDOMAIN would be if I wanted to have mainurl.com and then add another page to it, and an ADD-ON DOMAIN would be to have a totally separate URL and site sitting there on my same HostGator account.

Thought I'd better seek advice before I go wiping everything else out so I can start fresh and walk through these videos.

In Hostgator, all you need to do is this:

    - In your cPanel, go to "Addon Domains"
    - Add your domain information
    - It will show up as both subdomain.yourdomain.com and www.yournewdomain.com

You newly added domain functions just as it should normally. Don't worry about the subdomain part of it.

Like I said, when looking into your domain list, you will see your new domain listed as a regular domain and a subdomain of the domain on your main hosting account.

Eh, hope that helps. Wasn't the best explaination in the world.

OK so I'll see them listed in both places.

Thanks so much! Now at least I know I'm not quite the techie-tard I thought I was. (Or maybe I am, but I'm taking steps toward overcoming that little problem).

      Thanks again!

    Hi Jillian,
Actually your addon domains will reside in the subdomains that you created.
    So, it is perfectly okay.
So , if you wanted to check your stats for yetanotherdomain.com , you would actually have to check for yetanotherdomain.mainurl.com

So, all you need to do is to create those addon domains again. And yes, you will be able to create wordpress blogs on your addon domains this way.

    I hope this helps.

    bye,

I'm assuming it doesn't matter which of my URLs I told HostGator is my "main URL" then.

So if I want to use WordPress for each of the many separate web sites that I'm going to put on my HostGator account, do I upload it once to the public_html folder? Or does each add-on URL get its own upload of WordPress?

Each subdomain will need it's own installation of WP.
