Will the internet evolve into what TV is/was?

I was thinking about something. If you look back over the history of television advertising and marketing, probably hundreds of billions of dollars were spent to advertise, maybe more? And out of that even more was generated on the products/services advertised.

My question/comment is this. Its fair to say that if you have a budget that fits advertising in the right timeslot, demographic,or tv show, you will probably be successful in selling your product, creating awareness, whatever. BUT, to advertise on primetime tv it can be hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars to advertise.

As a small business I can NOT afford to advertise during american idol, or LOST, or Survivor, etc. I am left to advertising my small real estate business at 2am on WGN between infomercials (Pick one).

Will the net get like that? Its getting more and more mainstream, more and more people are turning the ad budget and dollars to the net, ie, SEO,PPC,FB ads,google/yahoo ads, etc.

I think it is STILL in the maybe the first half of its peak explosion, but was just wondering your thoughts on the net and advertising. Especially when google tv hit.

one more thing. the internet is a very big place, just like tv is a very big place. if you do it right, and know what you are doing, you can make money by using both mediums, and that is what I like about internet marketing. it was alwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays be there, year after year after year. just keep updating your products/services and adapting and you will do well.

Yes the furture of TV is the net. It is a case of how long the BIG BOYS of TV resist it. And you see thats this all changing now. HULU is a prime example

Advertising for the most part goes hand-in-hand with content. And lucky for us the big boys can't squelch our content.

As long as we can produce content and are able to put it out there for the masses we'll most definitely have an opportunity to garner a share of the advertising-dollar pie.

One of my favorite examples of this is Gary Vaynerchuk. On one of his videos he had a great demonstration about creating a beer blog and selling advertising.

He even went so far as to cold call a possible advertiser and actually got a positive response from the guy.

So until and unless they figure out how to stop us from distributing our content via article directories, video sharing sites and blogs we should have nothing but huge opportunity ahead of us.

I think if any one medium as a big audience then eventually the competition will grow. I think you may be thinking about TV too broadly. Yeah, primetime TV is expensive because they have so many viewers but whatever day-time TV or geo-targeting your ads?

Also, don't forget about the viewership on paid TV. You can advertise on channel 555 now and you could get a good sized targeted audience to see your ads.

The same goes with internet advertising. If you think about it, how many advertisers are there for the keyword money? TONS!! How many make money? Less but still plenty. There is even fierce competition in make money online right? So what happens? Prices are too high for small advertisers so they go for cheaper mediums with less viewership but count on that viewership being targeted.

To answer your question, its already happened. At least from an advertising point of view.
