I was skimming through my news reader and noticed that there seemed to be no consensus on using website (one word) vs. web site (two words). Which do you prefer? Any benefit to using one over the other?

At last check, Webster's Dictionary doesn't recognize "website" as legitimate. I have always used, and continue to use, "web site".

This is a fairly new term, and the trend over time is to compound and decapitalize these things after the novelty has worn off. When proofing/editing, I prefer "website" (lowercase). This is also an issue regarding Internet or internet, Net or net, Web or web. I think these will eventually always be lowercase. When television was still a newfangled contraption, it was always capitalized -- not anymore. A few years ago a popular dictionary (I forget which one) insisted that Internet and Web were old enough to get rid of the capital letters. Society is slow to catch on to this...

I'm leaning towards 'website' myself... it's more targeted & keyword friendly in my opinion... since web + site can mean many different things by themselves... ex: site map, job site, etc...

I use "website" in all my writing, but "web page". Hmmm? I'm confused. Then, there's "Internet" vs "internet".

And, let's not even get started on the old "colour" vs "color" debate, as we all know it's totally crass to leave out the "u" ;-D

To confuse you even more Kevin, what about web page vs webpage (to me either of them sound less professional than website, webpage sounds like a personal thing... like a myspace 'page', but website to me sounds more corporate/business like...)

Results 1 - 10 of about 470,000,000 for web page
        Results 1 - 10 of about 46,000,000 for webpage

Although... the keywords get less and less competition as we go...

It depends on my mood. However, after 11 years of this, I still, each and every time I am writing something that someone else will read, book, article, etc, I agonize when I type either web site or website.

And don't even get me started on how hard it is to remember which version I'm using in a single article.....

It's definitely "e-mail" and "e-book" and "e-learning", but it's "eBay" (Shaking my head in confusion, I need Jamesons now).

Website absolutely, that's because its one meaning in one word. "Web" could mean a lot of things, "site" could also, but "website" is something very familiar :-)

My spell checker flags "website" which I prefer but I differ to
it when writing sales copy. For email copy I do whatever I
please.... "web site" or "website" - willy, nilly. I use them
both because I like to live dangerously.

OK, I've learned two things from this poll...

    1. At least on this forum, it's website by more than 3:1

    2. Based on 35 votes total, it's just not that big an issue.

Thanks to all who voted and posted...
