Is extracting clips from movies allowed?

Before I run off and do this, I want to know if it is okay to extract clips from movies and then either upload them to youtube or place them on your site or both?

If so, anyone know of any software that does this? I can probably use camstudio to get what I need, but curious if there is a software out there that is made to do this.

cheers

If you have permission, sure. If not, it depends.

I'm guessing you don't really want the clips for the purpose of Critique, Analysis or commentary. Right?

If you use them without permission, it's likely going to be copyright infringement.

    It's not allowed!

Extracting clips can be done with any video editing suite from cheap to expensive! Make sure the data is in an editable format (avi, mpeg; not flv)! I wouldn't advise using camtasia, unless you don't need audio!

What you want to use the clips for, because there are some alternatives to prevent copyright infringement!

im toying with an idea.. for an example, using keywords that have to do with movie quotes to drive traffic to the site, when they arrive on the site have clips that accompany the quote, something like that. Then testing monetization through being an affiliate for a place that sells the movie.. or adsense or cpa, still tbd

You may want to do some hunting on YouTube. Many studios are posting trailers and clips from movies, particularly older ones. You could embed those clips as long as you follow the YT terms of service.

You could also extend the idea to TV shows...

It's gonna be difficult doing this without studio approval. You could use the trailers but chances are that there aren't any famous quotes in there.

What could be an idea is to make a site with famous quotes and displaying the time frame where they occur in the movie, like if someone looked up "Say hello to my little friend!" you state exactly when it's said in the movie. Beef up the site with trailer, imdb score, amazon affiliate, netflix affiliate and some on demand streaming affiliate!

I believe if you are using the footage to educate is alright under copyright laws, called "fair use".

This is one of my all time favorite examples of it!...

Yes, by the way, I AM in the Witness Protection Program. I could tell you who I am but then I would have to kill you.
