How do you know when to cut your losses?

I'm frustrated with my domains that aren't making any money after working so hard on them. How long should one give it before giving up on it and moving onto the next one?

    Hi there,

ever heard of the 80/20 rule? it's a personal principle that i follow closely even up till today.

Basically what it means is that 80% of your sales/ profits come from 20% of your efforts. So just focus on those that are making the most money and have huge potential, and scale them up/ improve on them.

No point wasting time working on sth that isnt working and trying to make it succeed. More productive and effective to attack those that are already working and make more $$$ from them.

    Hope this helps

How long have you been working on them? What method of monetization are you using?

Some methods see quicker results than others

I also have this problem. I have been putting up sites to make money out of it. Unfortunately, none of this is getting money. Though I believe that the traffic in these websites are good. I thought basing on the feedback of people means that I am getting close to making money of it.

Now, I have been trying to evaluate things which might went wrong.

If my domains don't make at least $10/year I let them expire.
If they make $11+, I hold them for another year because someday I might have time to further develop them (although in reality I never find time since I still focus on the winner sites).

Depends why they aren't working. Before doing anything, make sure you know WHY they aren't working otherwise you might just be replacing the old flops with the new ones.

Is it possible that you are using the wrong methods to try and profit from these sites? If so, then moving on to a different site will most likely give you the same results. What methods are you using and what are you trying to accomplish?

I would ask someone who is experienced to take a fresh look at them before giving up on them.

It could be as simple as switching the theme of the site or monetizing it a different way.

It may be that the site is not set up to encourage clicks or purchases.

Simple tweaks could make a big difference.

Firstly, how long have you had them, and how are you monetizing them?

Did you do proper keyword research before picking up those domains?

Also, what is the specific issue - are you getting traffic that isn't converting, or are you not getting any traffic at all?

You're all gonna kill me when I say this... LOL

I've only had the domain 3 weeks, but it's at the top of Google and gets decent traffic. I've got Adsense on it and it makes peanuts. And recently I purchased a PLR ebook that I put together to sell on the site and it's not selling.

My site is mainly an information page I know that but I would think some people would want related items. Hell, I'll just post the site. It's been almost impossible to monetize anyway.

      Opinions?

OK - but does that mean you aren't worried about any other regions but your own??

I would certainly look into this to ensure such ads aren't seen by anyone, anywhere, visiting your site.

Well of course not but what can I do about it? I can't have people from every country look at my site. And unless you tell me the exact URLs that are from the ads that you're seeing, I can't even block them from showing.

It might also be because of Google search history. There are so many things that can affect the ad we see but one thing is for certain, Google is having a hard time figuring out what your site is about, if it wasn't then most ads would be targeted and on topic for every visitor, judged either by the wesbsite content or your search history, which you can opt out of.

Sometimes you'll see different results with different browsers, clear your cookies, log out of Google etc.

As has been mentioned already, your not really targeting your visitors properly. First, you say you have traffic but what is the traffic, where are they coming from, what search terms are they using and what pages are those search terms bringing them to? When they land on your pages, is each page relevant to their search query.

Your articles / blog content is mostly below the fold.

The name description is below the fold and so are your offers, article links and ads. People don't have patience. As soon as the page loads they need to be hit hard in the face with instant relevancy to stop them going straight for the back button. This gives you a few more moments to hope they look at the ads and offers, which incidentally should be different on each page to suit the page content.

I'm willing to bet that most of your traffic is coming in through long tail and not through your main keyword. Is your trafic divided up with lots of low hits for name searches. If so then these visitors are looking for meanings of names, it mat have nothing to do with wanting to choose a name for their babies, it might be a curiosity search for the meaning of their own name.

Your site is not coming anywhere for me when I search for "christian baby names and meanings" which I presume is your main keyword. This search term may have more money potential for selling a book about names and possibly the newborn book but don't count on it. You should have pages dedicated to that search as well.

The Ad with "buy now" gives the impression I'm going to be taken straight to a shopping cart, which it does. Try making it a "more info" type ad with an enticing headline / title which takes them to either a sales page or at least an article / review of the benefits. Nobody is going to click on an ad that tells them nothing and go straight to a page asking for credit card.

Try to think like a searcher with absolutely no patience. You don't look for something on the web, read for three minutes before deciding whether you are on the right site and you most certainly do not go there with the intentions of buying something completely non related without at the very least having something capture your imagination on it enough to look further. And for what it's worth, "baby names" and "manuals for mothers" might seem related but they aren't, they are miles apart. Sure, you might be hitting on the right target to an extent but that's not why they are on your site. Your job as a marketer is to convince them, but to do that you first need to capture their interest. Want proof? Put up a niche site about making money and throw an Amazon widget on there linking to the business books category. You might get clicks but you wont get very many sales. Think absolute laser targeted relevancy!

                Hope that helps a bit

3 weeks is very short time (almost nothing) to quit on anything. Especially in IM.

My advice: Don't just eagerly wait for sales. Do your basics first. First one is web site that is UP ALL THE TIME.

The thing about adsense is that you cannot look at it the same as a regular wage.

If you are building an adsense network then it will make very little money at first. You have to keep building new sites and pages, building backlinks until one day you have a whole host of sites/pages that are ranked and getting lots of traffic and the income is sizable. Then you can go on holiday for a month and still make the exact same amount of money as each month that money rolls in regardless.

3 weeks is a short time. If you product is not selling and you are getting good targetted traffic it could be they don't want the information in it (they may have seen it all before if it is PLR) or you might be pitching it wrong.

The best way to see a decent profit quickly is to create your own product and plan a product launch. this involves:

        reserching the niche
        finding the problems
        creating the solution
offering a freebie to build a list
        marketing your freebie
        marketing to your list
finding JV partners for your launch

This is a lot of hard work but if done right can produce good profit in just a few days, although the effort and work leading up to those few days is sizeable.

Adsense is a good place to start but if you have set your expections on making a packet of money through it within 3 weeks then this is an unrealistic expectation and perhaps you should look at other methods.

With adsense you should do everything yourself until you see how it works, then get outsourcers to do all mundane work. But make sure you understand how it all works before you go paying people to do it for you or you will get into trouble.

The content is PLR but there were only 40 copies sold so I'm not sure that they've seen it before. I think I have a good product.

I'm currently trying to find someone to build a landing page for me and hopefully that will make more sales instead of just trying to sell it from the banner.

I would like to just have Adsense on it but apparently I'm even doing that wrong.

If your sites are getting a fair amount of targeted traffic, there is almost always a way you can make them profitable in my experience regardless of the niche.

Some markets are easier to monetize than others, but I would be surprised if there aren't offers out there which can't make your sites profitable.

The offers on your Christian Baby Names website are very weak, if I'm being totally honest.

One thing you might want to try are some low resistance CPA offers, another thing you could do is make your e-mail submission form more prominent.

It is below the fold and difficult to see.

In some markets, especially parenting - selling to them straight away is very, very difficult.

If you get a lot of your visitors onto a list, then start a proper dialogue/conversation with them through a blog etc, you'll find it much easier to sell them stuff.

When people visit your site, they are not looking to buy anything or in the buying mindset.

So getting them to buy anything straight away, is going to be very difficult.

Adsense works well on information sites along. For back links I would suggest using a good mass article submission tool.

Three weeks is really early but your site has some design issues regardless.

Your Adsense is not positioned for maximum clicks. Also it looks like ...well Ads. If you had a more optimized theme where the separation wasn't so defined it could work much better. Let it flow....

Another area to look at is the large Ad for your PLR book on the left side. Would you pay $19 for a slim 30 page PLR book when you can likely get a hardcover book that has been reviewed on Amazon for less? It is unlikely many will buy that but it is detracting from your Adsense clicks.

Hmmm, I think you need a better offer on that eBook. You're asking me to spend $19 and the only thing you're going to tell me about it is what's in that ad? I'd at least make it link out to a longer sales page with more details, not right to a shopping cart check-out page.

I'm actually #1-#5 on Google for "Christian Baby Names" (been going up and down) which is my keyword phrase. So the site does get a good bit of traffic from that.

Thanks for your input. I'm going to take all of the best suggestions here today and work it out.

How many hits do you get for that term? If that's the main phrase that's bringing people to your main page then work on that. I would think people using that search term are obviously looking for ideas. What can you figure out from that? I must admit this is a subject that would bore the pants off of me but I'll take some wild guesses.

They are probably (hopefully, never presume!) looking for ideas to name their newly born or not yet born child. Work on that and that only for the moment. Look for a book on clickbank or amazon (low profit but good test). move the big paragraph of text at the top of your page, put it underneath somewhere.

When visitor lands on your page, presume that's what's on their mind. In a few short words, large font, let them know they they are on the right page to search for name ideas, that they can simply browse through the list below. Have your book offer somewhere close by telling them how the book will give them much better ideas than what they can find on the internet, (or whatever) don't link it straight to the sales page or amazon page but to a review on your own site telling them all the benefits of the book. How it gives better ideas and they can read a book in the a more relaxed surrounding, do they really want to choose the life long name of their child staring at a computer screen, blah blah etc.

This isn't how to refine your site or pages, this is just some basic idea to find out what is interesting to your visitors. Of course still test all the other pregnancy stuff etc but don't clutter the pages with it until you at least figure out what the visitor is looking for.

YOU'RE bored with it?? I'm an atheist who saw a good keyword phrase!

But yeah I need to expand more on the book and I'm looking into that now. I'm gonna get a sales page designed.

You're braver than me, I don't think I could have faced it!

But that book has nothing to do with the keyphrase that you're ranking for or am I missing something. Is the book about names? The book should not be the focus of your main page unless that page is absolutely on the subject of what the book's about and the visitors search terms suggest the same.

If I could see the site, I would. It's still down for me.

        The site is back up.

Do you need me to PM the links I see so you can block them?

        I'm in the UK.

I think another issue (maybe someone has mentioned it sorry) is that visually everything looks hunched together. I'm am not an adsense expert but I had this exact same thing with a client of mine. I told him to spread his site out so people weren't bombarded with ads. Give them the content in a more flowing fashion. Doing this worked for him. More traffic - higher conversions. He was a happy chap. I used my own thoughts as a consumer to give him that feedback. I looked at his site first time and it screamed 'give me your money' Therefore it put me off quick.

It helps to step back and ask which is what you've done. Nothing is a mistake - its a learning curve. I use them daily to improve. It's all good. Don't give up

SIDENOTE: My client had much better conversions with Chikita than adsense. He actually said that before we began site renovation, so we used that more on the site...but the conversion were improved as I said when we changed his layout.

If you are using Firefox, press ctrl + f5 to force a reload. It has probably cached the site from when it was down. It is fine for me.

I also don't see any of the other errors mentioned so far. In fact it looks good.

If you are using another browser, I've heard ctrl + f5 works in IE too, not sure about others.

Since you mention Christian and Hebrew names it isn't surprising that Adsense shows religious ads.

No it's a major routing error and I'm getting really frustrated with it. It's been down almost 12 hours for me now.

          Hi Jennifer,
It's working for me. If refreshing your browser doesn't work you might have to clear cache and/or reboot or try a different computer.

My ISP does this to me all the time. If I hook up my cell modem to my laptop it works fine.

          Regarding the site ...

Three weeks isn't enough time to know much. Generally speaking, I recommend a minimum of six months.

I second the mention to move your subscription form up ... make it top of one of the side bars.

I would also try to find a theme for your blog that looks close to the main page or (if you can) change the main page to match the blog. What I'm getting at here is continuity ... some might feel they went to another site when they click over to the blog which can be a turn off.

My other thoughts have already been stated ... content, pricing (make a "Limited Time Launch Special" price ... go low) and so on.

Last but not least ... if you're having this much trouble connecting I feel you need to seriously consider a new hosting company. Just today it has had WAY too many issues.

          I hope this helps!
