Which is Better? Blog on mydomain.com or mydomain.com/blog

My main site is a static html site on mydomain.com. If I extend a blog on a folder like:

http://www.mydomain.com/blog

... just wondering about your experience about doing this in terms of performance (traffic, ranking on SE)...

Does it work less effective than to build in a reverse way?

Blog on http://www.mydomain.com
My other stuff at: http://www.mydomain.com/product

Which one is better? Please advise..

Thanks!

To be honest i would use a subdomain from your cpanel like: blog.mydomain.com for me it looks a little more professional! and best of all it's free.

Well it is for me on hostgator and is very easy to set up! If you need any help then will be happy to!

Believe me, there is no right or wrong answer, even less "better" that would fit for everyone.

It all depends on your goal with the site, how do you want your content to be organized, your priorities etc.

    "Effective" in which way?

It depends upon the objectives for your site.

If you want to build a list, then you'd likely want to have
a squeeze page in the root of the root domain.

You can have a blog installed in the root and set it up to
display your recent posts on a page called blog too if you
      want.

Or, install a separate blog into a subdirectory named blog.

      Dedicated to your success,

I like it as /site.com/blog/ because subdomains are treated a seperate domains (like add-on domains). If you get backlinks for /blog.site.com/ they only for that subdomain. Not for your site.com.

Instead if you get backlinks for /site.com/blog/ the content and backlinks belong to site.com.

I mean, does it have any effect to have the site rank higher on SE using mydomain.com as blog or mydomain.com/blog as blog? or whatever traffic benefits?

Thanks Phil! Setting up Wordpress is not an issue as all hosting now has Fantastico.

My only concern is about the location of the blog and the effect it's going to have on rankings etc.

    Thanks anyway!

Having your blog reside in a folder within your existing domain might actually have SEO benefits (perhaps), due to being able to leverage any "authority" your domain has built up in the eyes of the search-engines.

That wouldn't be the case if you started your blog on a new, fresh domain.

And it might not be the case if you started it under a subdomain (http://blog.yourdomain.com), neither - since I believe Google treats these as being the same as separate domains.

In the end though, it's your choice. There's no real right or wrong, and - depending on your needs and intentions - no definitive better or worse.

You all bring up points I hadn't considered regarding the SEO involved in this. I've been wondering the same thing about one of my sites' blogs. I like the thought that putting it in a sub-folder may help with SEO. Just never thought of it.
