Want to start my own forum

Hi,

I am currently a very active member on an adult information forum (not porn) and I am not happy how the webmaster runs it, so I would like to start my forum.

I know nothing about running a forum.

Are there any good forums sites that will let me start my own adult related forum?

thanks in advance.

PS I am not concerned about making money from this particular venture. Also any advice will be appreciated.

Buy a Domain and Hosting and search for Free Forums SW and install it. There are tons on Free Forums SW's available.

But you have to pay for the domain and hosting.

Or else create a Yahoo Group etc.

It's very easy and inexpensive to simply install a forum software on your own site through cpanel. If you can spare the cost to run it every month, that's what I would recommend.

I've only used SMF (simple machines forum) but am impressed. The support forums are really active. In fact they might be larger than this forum. You get good answers quickly. (Not super fast, sometimes I wait overnight or so.)

It is free, simple, and even the default install looks good. In a situation like the one you described, I would try something like that too.

It's not perfect. SMF 2.0 is overdue for its official release, but is in wide use already. It works well from the ones I've looked at and I might set up one of them soon. They seem to be on top of security more than phpbb.

For the cost of a domain and webhosting (which you possibly already have) you can build a nice looking forum with Simple Machines Forum script for free. It's available as a quick and easy installation with Fantastico or Softaculous, and there are loads of free themes and packages to make it look and perform the way you want it to. As Lloyd has mentioned, the support forum is great.

    Fiachra,
have you approached the current owner about selling? or have you searched Flippa,eBay, or digital point for similiar forums for sale? as long as their reputation is not bad that's one way to 'start' a forum - purchase one already running and build it from there.
    Good luck,

Don't say you are not concern in making money, because that must not be set aside in every goal. Right?

Well, you must first think of the best design of the site.
    2nd, how you promote it
3r, who are the persons you want to in.

What would be the point of starting up a website on a free hosting service with a subdomain?

    Get a domain from namecheap.com

Purchase some hosting, I can help you out if you would like.

Install phpbb or another forum script for free.

    Then get going!

Installing a simple phpbb forum is really easy. Check out the Fantastico option at hostgator and you will see that you can quickly install a phpbb forum. Running a forum and getting an active userbase is rather hard. You either have to have a very narrow niche or "fake it until you make it". What I mean is, hire fake posters or post yourself from several accounts. I have managed to get a few forums going for a month or so, but eventually they died down, since I stopped posting myself.

How many users do you expect to have in the first 6 months that the site is live?

On average how many do you expect to be using the forum at any given time?

What type of interaction do you want you members to be able to have? Just start/reply to threads? Can they create blogs, or private areas where they can invite other users to join their groups etc.?

Once you have a overview of what you want, then go out as see what software will allow you to have said functionality. This will also help you figure out what type of hosting you will go with. Finally are you pretty technical, or do you plan on having someone help you with the tech part?

Starting a forum can me time consuming in the beginning. Have you realistically thought about the time commitment? For 3 years I was a Super Admin of a forum with around 20k members and a moderator of another forum. I then decided to start my own forum from scratch...

I ended up shutting the forum down, due to the time commitment. It was more than I was willing to commit at the time. You may have already thought about these questions. I am just posting them here to get the juices flowing for you or anyone else reading this who may be considering starting a forum.

      Cheers,

      Jay

So Jay, if running a forum can be a big commitment how about getting an extra moderator and admin for it? The best time to outsource isn't it? I find the idea of starting my own forum fun. Hope to read some inspirations from this thread.
