Warriors, Your Opinions Needed Please! Marketing Consulting Service

Hi Warriors,
I came up with an idea and I could really use some opinions from strange people on the Internet.

Here's the deal:
My father spent 20 years working for large wholesale corporations (maybe some European Warriors will recognize Tesco or MAKRO, quite similar to Wal-Mart as far as I know) on top manager positions. His experience with various forms of marketing is vast and extensive.

Unfortunately, there is a sad habit in our country. Should I express it politely, it's something like:

You're over 50 => you're useless and have no idea how things work.

It's of course rubbish, but it's the simple truth. As a result, my father can't fully utilize his experience and that's where I come in.

The idea would be to offer Skype one-on-one coaching, probably focused on Public Relations and Personal Brand. It's hardly a surprise that my father is clueless about the internet marketing, so I'd like to hear your opinions on these questions:

  • Are there enough people working offline and using Google/War Forum/Online resources in general to create a demand for marketing coaching?

  • Provided there are certain mutual elements for online and offline marketing (there are, e.g. the Personal Brand), would it make any sense to provide offline marketing experience to online marketers?

  • What's more, a lot of the salesmen today lack the humbleness and ability to confess that they don't know everything => which brings us back to the demand question...

There is a high demand for people who don't know anything about the internet both male and female - all ages.

BUT Coaching is something I'm slowly getting out of because offline people simply don't get it immediately and they become very frustrated and lack push to understand it. You can be the best coach in the world but if someone won't budge to learn more you can't do much.

This is why I'm now going more into consultancy...i.e let me work out a plan, you say okay to it, I get it done. No fuss.

Of course I still have people who want me to teach them basics - and I mean I was doing a talk the other day to a bunch of distributors and one put up his hand and said 'what is a blog?' The issue here is you really have to make it something that they see the benefit of and unless you produce cash falling from the sky in a second people don't see the long term benefit.

Another thing - I found it really difficult to market the term 'COACH' in my specific area. To many they think it means 'counsellor'. Serious.

As for skype calls - yes they can work. But don't always rely on them for your sole way to communicate as Skype can flake out plus imagine being a complete newb - email is probably about as much as one could cope with and skype brings in a whole different issue of getting sound right etc.

Some people in IM always forget - there are people who still think email is the only way to communicate online. They know nothing more and they're almost petrified their comps will blow up if they use social networking.

I agree with ITS-V. We all think that webinars and skype are the norm but to the local business these are technologies that they don't know and you have to spend time trying to educate them.
I am an Internet Marketer and a professional trainer and I thought people would jump at receiving training online but it was too difficult to keep trying to explain how I would run courses on line.
Ofcourse I am not sure if that is just here in the UK. I do think we are behind here compare to other countries

grr I forgot to mention...your public relations branding etc won't mean much if someone doesn't see the benefit nor how to really use the internet - unless you're selling a consultancy package. That's just my opinion. Others may have a different POV

The coaching channel may be a route for him to go... But I would tend to want to focus his coaching to offline business owners in the retail setting... Without the experience on the Internet, I think we would be throwing him to the sharks to have him coach online retail shop owners...

But I have to hedge my comments a bit... I think most of the people who use coaches are going to be Internet Marketers who can appreciate the value of a coach.

I know your dad is in a tough situation.

I wish I had better answers for you.

The truth is that Internet Marketers will pay for coaching. But to sell your dad's coaching services, he needs to construct a game plan that offers concrete training, outlined with a great amount of detail.

Now, what detail is included is still going to be somewhat in the air. You need to figure out what people want, and then figure out what your dad can give them. Then build his program around those basics.

I wish I could be of more help.

      Thanks for your input guys!

@tpw - that's fine, I (we) knew it was not going to be easy. It will take some time to figure out what exactly should his service offer... maybe the best bet would be to sit him down in front of the WF and let him read
