Hi Everyone,

Disclaimer: I am all for sharing content and offering value to the list exchaning ads to build your list is not what this is in reference to
Have you ever used a squeeze page, and at the bottom of the opt in box you have we will never rent share spam or etc.. your email address we respect your privacy?

Have you ever done an ad swap?

Lately I have noticed a huge influx of ad swaps hitting my email box.
These ad swaps always start something like I have set up a download for you. or Your download has not been confirmed. or receipt for your purchase.

Although the titles appear to be for a purchase. the reality is they are for a paid ad they have sent to their list.

When a person signs up for something they are understanding they are signing up to that person's list. not to be spammed by a ton of others.

I find this behavior unethical and certainly irritating. I think if you say I will not share and I respect your privacy that is what it should mean. these are not emails sent by the list owner on their own per se they are emails written by the advertiser and then sent to the list owner's list and vice versa. If you want to send a subscriber to another person's optin page. tell them that. "hey I came across this resource I found to be useful and I thought you may to it will cost you your email address but the content is worth it." Of course that would require actually checking out the content and hey who wants to do that right show me the money and that is it.

Just something to think about I am sure this irritates and moreover allows for mistrust on the subscriber's part. I am all for building a list, making sales and building rep. I am against being dishonest or deceiving in any way and it will indeed kick you in the pants in the long run.

Just a thought

I don't do ad swaps although I do promote others products.

I don't know any list owner that lets someone they are doing
an ad swap with access their server or mailing list account.
Instead they generally send the email.

If I were a list owner who did ad swaps, I'd read over every
email before sending it, and definitely NOT send anything that
I was sure would irritate a large percentage of my list members
after working so hard to build that list.

    That's just me though.

The opt-in confirmation email that you described does sound
like something I wouldn't do, but I don't consider doing an
ad swap as violating the promise made as long as the list
    owner sent the email.

I would unsubscribe from any list where the list owner sent
    such questionable emails.

    Hi Willie,

Yes this is my point exactly, These emails people are paying for but when the person subscribes to your list it is your list they are trusting you to send them good content and if you recommend something which is what always ends up in these ad swaps they would hope that you have checked it out this is not happening I mean there is 0 wrong with sending subscribers to others at all there is a ton wrong with advertising a product you have no idea about I just got one a second ago that said at the bottom-your sig here. LOL what?
Like this kind of stuff is not really making anyone appear professional
    Thanks for your comments Willie!

Nothing at all wrong with adswaps, when you sign up to get another's freebie you are signing on to their list to get it, so does not mean your list owner is giving away your information at all, as you will freely give your email to get on the other list.

However, your complaint seems more to be with how they are doing adswaps. Yes, I don't like those tactics, either.

But you can do adswaps in a completely upfront and honest way, nothing wrong with the concept of adswapping, itself.

      Hi
Yes I agree as I said I have nothing against building a list etc but the tactics being demonstrated in these emails are just silly.
      Good point
      thanks for commenting

By doing this constantly and bombarding their list with ad swaps, it's going to result in a lot of attrition (i.e. people unsubscribing), and they'll have to be constantly building their list to make up for the people dropping out.

At the end of the day, it could be a futile endeavor if the number of people unsubscribing exceeds the number added through ad swaps. So, you definitely want to watch your list numbers when doing ad swaps to ensure that you're actually adding subscribers and not doing the opposite.

      Hi Paul,
yeah exactly and to top it off by doing it your rep begins to go down as well as your subscriber stickiness and people talk.
      Awesome point
